Da Nang begins Covid-19 testing on local household representatives

Updated: 16:46, 04/09/2020
Representatives from 71,424 households across Da Nang who have not been tested for Covid-19 before will be sampled from September 4 to 8.

Under a plan issued by the Da Nang People's Committee on September 2, focused on large-scale household testing for SARS-CoV-2 in the central city, over the past two days, locals in Son Tra District have been providing samples for Covid-19 testing.

Da Nang has begun collecting COVID-19 samples for household representatives.

Pham Hong Nam, Director of the Son Tra Medical Centre, said that during this phase, around 11,061 household representatives will be tested using sample pooling method. The subjects include those at high risk of infection, those who have been in close contact with many people, and the elderly.

Under the plan, the mass household testing for SARS-CoV-2 would boost early detection for those infected with Covid-19 in the community, especially for cases where no clinical symptoms are shown, in order to quickly implement measures to localise and stamp out any outbreaks in time to not let the disease from spreading in the city.

The sample collection is applied on individuals representing each household that has not yet been tested for SARS-CoV-2. Households whose members have been sampled for SARS-CoV-2 from July 25 until the implementation of the newly-issued plan are excluded from the ongoing mass testing.

People who have had cough, fever, sore throat, shortness of breath, fatigue, body aches, chills, decreased or loss of taste and smell and pneumonia in the last 14 days but have not yet been sampled should be taken to medical facilities to immediately provide samples for SARS-CoV-2 testing.

The mass testing in the first phase is expected to last from September 4 to 8 for 71,424 households that have not yet been tested.

Currently, the capacity for SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic testing in the city is about 3,000-4,000 samples a day.

These devices are researched and manufactured by the Institute of Technology and Education Development (ITED), which are capable of completing testing for 47 samples in two hours.
