'Les Misérables' on the Vietnamese stage

‘Les Misérables’ – the classic work of French writer Victor Hugo will be performed for the first time on November 21-22 at the Hanoi Opera House.

The Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Theatre (VNOB) has completed the purchase of the music rights for the opera.

According to the VNOB, in order to bring a range of special works in 2020, the VNOB tried very hard to build complete creation and production teams, including stage director Nguyen Trieu Duong, who has returned from the UK.

The cast of ‘Les Misérables’.

In particular, the opera ‘Les Misérables’ this year is notable for the internationalization of its cast. The cast of ‘Les Misérables’ will include foreign actors in Vietnam, with the main ‘pillar’ being famous Vietnamese opera singers such as Dao To Loan, Huy Duc, Tran Trang Sao Mai and Bui Trang.

The work is expected to contribute to enhancing the solidarity of the peoples all over the world, joining hands to fight the pandemic, clearly expressing human love, faith in life and striving to overcome all difficulties.

According to Meritorious Artist Tran Ly Ly - Director of the VNOB, in 2020, with the dangerous spread of the Covid-19 epidemic, many art programmes in Vietnam, including the VNOB’s programme, had to be canceled or postponed, such as the ballet tour ‘Swan Lake’, which was performed by the theater in August.

Despite facing many difficulties due to the pandemic, besides buying the copyright, the VNOB has made its best efforts to bring the opera ‘Les Misérables’ to the stage in due time.

Masterpiece “Kieu Story” by renowned poet Nguyen Du has been brought to the new genre of opera under the name of “Kim Van Kieu” by Vietnamese and French performers.
