Luc Nam creates OCOP product brands, improves farmers’ income

Updated: 17:43, 21/06/2023
(BGO) – Over the past years, Luc Nam district has always paid attention to building brands for One Commune One Product (OCOP) products as it is identified as an opportunity to enhance the value of local agricultural products, thus increasing income for farmers.

In 2019, the family of Dang Thi Van Anh in Bao Loc 2 village, Bao Son commune invested in a wine production line under traditional method. The material is yellow flower sticky rice or Moc Tuyen sticky rice, which is processed under the traditional fermentation process. With this production process, her family's wine still retains its distinctive flavor.

Typical agricultural products of Luc Nam district are displayed and introduced at the opening ceremony of Than Nong (God of Agriculture) Temple Festival.

In 2020, with the guidance and support of district relevant units on labelling and product introduction registration, her family's wine was recognized by the province as a 3-star OCOP product. Van Anh said: “After obtaining the status, the product has won more trust of customers and the sales have become more favorable, with its market expanded to other provinces such as Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh…”

Nghia Phuong Custard Apple Cooperative was established in 2019 with 71 members and an area of nearly 50 hectares. Custard apple is grown mainly in four villages: Suoi Van, Ky Son, Tri Yen and Te under VietGAP standard, so the fruit is large, beautiful and delicious.

The average yield reaches about 11-15 tons per ha, with the selling price ranging from 30,000 VND to 70,000 VND (1.28-2.98 USD) per kg. In order to improve product quality, the district's specialized units have guided gardeners to apply scientific and technical advances in the process of caring, pruning and pollination. In 2022, Nghia Phuong custard apple was recognized as a 3-star OCOP product.

Recognizing its strength as a locality with a large area of agricultural and forestry land and many typical products, the district People's Committee has always paid attention to implementing the OCOP program. Accordingly, the locality has actively directed specialized agencies to conduct a general review of typical and strong local agricultural and handicraft products to create OCOP product brands.

The relevant agencies have done communication work well, making people and owners of production facilities fully aware of the meaning and benefits of branding. The district has supported 10 million VND (425 USD) for each product obtaining the OCOP status, while promoting products in various forms.

The whole district currently has 16 recognized provincial-level OCOP products, eight more than the set target by 2025. Of which, 14 products are rated 3 stars, including chestnuts, wine made of yellow flower sticky rice, pineapple and custard apple. Two products rated 4 stars are yellow flower tea (Camellia chrysantha) and dried cordyceps.

As many as 14 cooperatives have participated in the OCOP program. In 2023, the district strives to have 10 more 3-star OCOP products. Vu Tri Hoc, deputy head of the district Division of Agriculture and Rural Development, said "The OCOP program helps localities effectively tap their potential and strengths and improve product quality to increase competitiveness, meeting market demands. From now to 2025, Luc Nam district will focus on building the OCOP brands for jicama, apple and spring rolls.”
