Lychee season brings more jobs and higher income

Updated: 16:52, 31/05/2024

BAC GIANG – It is now harvest season of Bac Giang lychee. Although this year's output has decreased compared to last year, due to the short harvest time, gardeners and traders need to mobilize more seasonal workers. Many people can earn from a few hundred thousand VND to millions of VND every day from harvesting, packing, loading and unloading, weighing and choosing the fruits.

Since mid-May, Phuc Hoa commune in Tan Yen district has been hustle and bustle with early maturing lychee buying and selling activities. Hundreds of motorbikes carrying heavy baskets of lychee are flocking to the weighing points.

Early maturing lychees are purchased in Phuc Hoa commune (Tan Yen district).

Nguyen Ngoc Sy, a lychee trader, has set up a weighing point for nearly ten days in Phuc Hoa commune. On average, every day, he buys 4-5 tonnes of lychee then brings to sell at supermarkets in the Central region and southern provinces.

To promptly buy and pack fruits, he hires 12 workers to do different stages with costs ranging from 350,000 VND (14.8 USD) to more than 1 million VND (42 USD) per person per day.

Sy said fresh lychees are thoroughly selected before supplying to supermarkets. Every stage must be done carefully such as cutting the stems, placing the fruit in foam boxes so as to avoid any impact that bruises or damages the fruits.

Phuc Hoa commune has 680 hectares of lychees ready for harvest. Because most young people work as workers, only the elderly and middle-aged labourers harvest lychees. At this time, the early maturing lychees are ripening so many households have to hire more workers from neighboring communes such as Tan Trung, Lien Chung, Hop Duc (Tan Yen district) to harvest the fruit.

According to Phuc Hoa commune leaders, this year, the entire commune has 680 hectares of lychees ready for harvest.

Along with the early ripening lychee hub of Phuc Hoa, many gardeners in the communes of Phuong Son, Hong Giang, Tan Son (Luc Ngan district) also started harvesting lychees.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, lychee output in the whole province is estimated at 100,000 tonnes. It is now peak harvest time of early ripening lychees during short period of time. The lychee crop is expected to last till the end of July.

Gardeners and traders need a lot of human resources to harvest the fruits as well as support other stages of preliminary processing, loading, unloading and transporting lychees.

Due to the sharp decrease in lychee production in the main season, this year, many traders launched trade promotion activities earlier to find quality sources of goods. Phuc Hoa lychees are ripen about 10 days earlier than expected.

Currently, many Chinese businesses and traders have come to Bac Giang to survey, purchase and consume lychees in Tan Yen and Luc Ngan districts.
