Updated: 15:06, 29/05/2024

BAC GIANG- The total lychee output in the northern province of Bac Giang is estimated at 100,000 tonnes this year. In order to protect prestige of Bac Giang lychee trademark in domestic and export markets, the agricultural sector together with gardeners, firms and cooperatives has attached importance to production and improving the product quality.

Luc Ngan is home to the largest lychee growing area in the province with over 17,000 hectares. This locality currently has 103 lychee planting area codes for export to Thailand (2 codes), the US (16 codes), Japan (33 codes), Australia (13 codes) and China (39 codes). There are 34 packaging facilities granted export codes. Particularly, 30 hectares of early ripening lychee in the communes of Tan Moc and My An have been certified to meet VietGAP standards.

According to Nguyen Van Hai, Vice Chairman of the people’s committee of Luc Ngan district, the trademark of Luc Ngan lychee has been affirmed in both domestic and overseas markets even the high demanding markets such as Japan, EU, US, Australia and China.

“Although the lychee output this year decreases, it has good quality enjoying good prices from 30,000 to 70,000 VND (1.2 to 2.7 USD) per kilo since early season. We commit to producing safe lychee with the best quality meeting the buyers’ requirements and standards”, said he.

The production has been properly and synchronously implemented when farmers strictly obey technical procedures and ensure safety. This crop, Diep Van Hai’s family in Tan Moc commune, Luc Ngan district grows 0.4 hectares of early ripening lychee following VietGAP procedures expected to harvest 6 tonnes of fruit.

“In order to ensure quality and standards, my family uses organic and microbial fertilizers and bio products with short quarantine period to fertilize the plants. These products were tested and recommended by professional officials”, said Hai.

The lychee output in Phuc Hoa commune, Tan Yen district, the locality with a high-tech lychee production planning area, reaches about 10,000 tonnes this year. For years, the specialized agencies of the district and commune have instructed farmers to produce early ripening lychee following cooperative and cooperative group models applying scientific and technological advancements to yield safe and qualified products meeting export standards.

The commune has 20 planting area codes for export involving hundreds of participating households. The whole steps from production, preservation and transportation to consumption are under strict control. The planting areas apply the traceability system (QR codes enclosed with information of the product origin) for customers to identify and trace the lychee origin.

This year, the total lychee growing area in the province is 29,700 hectares with an expected output of 100,000 tonnes (including 50,000 tonnes of early lychee and the rest of main-crop lychee). A number of firms have surveyed and signed consumption agreements with cooperatives and gardeners.

“Lychee growers in the province have sold more than 200 tonnes of lychee since mid-May. Lychee has been in smooth consumption and exported to some difficult markets. So far, the agricultural sector has paid special attention to managing and guiding farmers to apply science and technology in lychee production to meet export standards”, according to Le Ba Thanh, Vice Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
