MoIT proposes remote inspection, recognition for export of lychee to Japan

Updated: 16:17, 07/05/2020
(BGO)- The provincial Department of Industry and Trade has received a correspondence from the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) on addressing obstacles and boosting export of fresh lychee to Japan in 2020.

Previously, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery of Japan (MAFF) sent a diplomatic note to announce that it was impossible to send experts to Vietnam to inspect and recognise the disinfection treatment system of fresh lychee due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, the export of Vietnam’s fresh lychee to the Japanese market for the first time would not be implemented in the 2020 lychee harvest.

Facing this situation, MoIT requested the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan to work with MAFF to persuade the Japanese side to consider other solutions instead of having to send experts to Vietnam to inspect disinfection facilities.

Particularly, giving temporary authority to independent inspection organisations in Vietnam to inspect disinfection facilities in the short term or coordinating with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam to implement remote inspection measures (checks on files and via livestream of disinfection facilities).

Besides, MoIT urged the provincial Department of Industry and Trade to grasp information and timely inform related units and enterprises this content. MoIT will continue closely collaborate with related agencies and localities of both countries to seek solutions to solve difficulties for export of Vietnam’s fresh lychee to Japan.

According to Tran Quang Tan, Director of the provincial Department of Industry and Trade, lychee fruit gains good quality this year thanks to favourable weather conditions.

In order to surmount difficulties for export of lychee, the province has constructed 3 scenarios for export of lychee in which the province will focus on consuming in domestic market in case lychee is impossible to be exported due to Covid-19 pandemic.
