Nguyen Son Long (Viet Yen district) wins first prize at National “Reading Culture Ambassador” Contest

(BGO) - The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism held the award ceremony of the 2021 “Reading Culture Ambassador” Contest. Nguyen Son Long (born in 2010), a student of class 6A3, Than Nhan Trung junior high school, Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province won first prize. 

His entry was inspired from the book “Con da ve nha” (I’m home). This is a comic book in Vietnamese and English by author Nguyen Tang Quang, a young architect who is studying a master degree in design management at a prestigious university in the United Kingdom.

Nguyen Son Long receives first prize at the “Reading Culture Ambassador” Contest of Bac Giang province in 2021.

This book was written when he and many others were undergoing quarantine at the Military School of the 7th Military Zone, district 12, Ho Chi Minh city and published in 2020.

Based on this book, Nguyen Son Long made a video clip about the fight against Covid-19 pandemic of Bac Giang province. Long used English in the 10-minute video with Vietnamese subtitles and many emotional illustrations which are the images of doctors and medical workers on the frontier line wearing protective clothes to fight the pandemic in hot weather of 38-39 Celsius degrees.

Many got exhausted even fainted because of the hot weather. Despite facing high risk of infection, they still kept their optimism and strong belief in a victory against the pandemic.

In his video, Long shared his activities contributing to spreading the reading culture to other people around him. Particularly, he set up a group on facebook named “Reading books every day with Nguyen Son Long” attracting participation of hundreds of students in the district and others. Besides, he established and maintain the club “Free reading and studying English at home” and shared his idea to organize reading activity with the teachers and friends at school.

According to Do Thi Hue, Long’s mother, when Long was making his entry, Viet Yen district was an epicenter of Bac Giang province and nationwide causing him a lot of difficulties to make the video due to isolation and lockdown imposed on the communes and towns.

Long’s sister also won first prize at the “Reading Culture Ambassador” contest of Bac Giang province in 2021.

“Long’s entry was carefully prepared with graphic illustration, comprehensive overview and profound messages about solidarity, love and good lifestyle of human being. Especially, it was made in English creating unique feature of the entry. His prize is not only a pride of himself but also of the family, school and the homeland of Bac Giang”, said Nguyen Dac Hong, Director of Bac Giang provincial Library.

In 2020, Nguyen Son Long won third prize at the National Reading Culture Ambassador Contest after being honoured at the provincial contest. This year, he continued making breakthrough and bagged the highest prize at this playground.

Apart from Long, 2 students of Bac Giang bagged third prizes including Nguyen Tran Van Khanh, class 4A3, Le Loi primary school, Bac Giang city and Ngo Tien Dat, class 12A6, Luc Ngan No 1 high school. Bac Giang provincial Library won the collective prize for good organization of the preliminary round at the locality. This is the 3rd consecutive year the agency won this prize.

The 2021 “Reading Culture Ambassador” Contest was launched in February 2021 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This is a meaningful activity for students nationwide to inspire their passion for reading, thereby encouraging and fostering reading movement, forming reading habit and skill in young generation and contributing to developing reading culture at school and in the community.
