Quality products attract customers

Since the beginning of the harvest season, the organic lychee production area in Dong Giao village, Quy Son commune (Luc Ngan) has been always bustling with visitors. This area boasts lychee orchards with beautiful, large, sweet, and fragrant fruits.

According to Vu Van Men, leader of a cooperative group in Dong Giao village specializing in producing organic lychees for export to Japan, Europe, the US Australia, his family has nearly 2 hectares of lychee. In 2020, with the support of local authorities and relevant agencies, he and six other households in the village established an organic lychee production cooperative group with a total area of 10.8 ha.

Complying with the instructions of the provincial Sub-Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, the cooperative group was granted by the Japanese side a code for export to this country in 2020.

In this year's lychee crop, Viet Phap Joint Stock Company (Hanoi) and Global Food Import Export Joint Stock Company (Bac Giang) signed contracts with the cooperative group to purchase lychees at a price of 30,000-35,000 VND (1.3-1,5 USD) per kg.

In addition to products sold at high prices, its lychee production area also attracts 5-7 groups of visitors per week.

Also following the organic production method like Men's cooperative group, the lychee garden of the family of Phung Thi Vinh, a member of the Thanh Hai Agricultural Cooperative in Cau Den village, Thanh Hai commune, is now in peak harvest. Her family's lychees have been already ordered by Viet Phap Joint Stock Company as well as traders and patrons with high prices.

According to the Luc Ngan Division of Agriculture and Rural Development, organic lychees are larger and sweeter, and growers do not worry about consumption because enterprises take responsibility for purchasing. Currently, the price of organic lychees is nearly double that of conventional lychees in the market.

Expanding organic lychee production areas

The lychee area in Luc Ngan district is currently 15,750ha (an increase of 300ha compared to 2021). Of which, more than 12,000ha are produced up to VietGAP, GlobalGAP and organic standards. All lychee products of the district are qualified for export to China.

To promote the image of Luc Ngan lychees, this season the district People's Committee has selected 40 typical orchards producing organic lychees to bring delegations to visit, experience and buy products.

In order to create a "push" to transform intensive farming methods, increase the value of lychees, and facilitate product sale, especially creating a safe environment for people, the provincial People's Committee has approved a project to support sustainable fruit tree production in Bac Giang province for the 2021-2025 period.

According to the Sub-Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, the province will support the district to build three models of organic lychee production, with a minimum scale of 10 ha per model. Each model is expected to receive about 600 million VND (25,700 USD) to buy fertilizers in the first 3 years, cover management costs, and implement procedures for obtaining organic certification.

To implement the project soon, Nguyen The Thi, Vice Chairman of the district People's Committee, said that the locality has directed specialized units to survey locations for developing organic lychee production models in Giap Son, Tan Son and Quy Son communes.

“By 2025, the whole district strives to have about 50ha of lychee certified to meet organic production standards. These models will contribute to changing people's awareness in both producing lychees, and attracting tourists and protecting the environment," said Thi.
