Overview of Bac Giang - Proposed political - administrative hub after merging with Bac Ninh

BAC GIANG — The Party Central Committee has outlined plans to merge Bac Giang and Bac Ninh provinces, with the consolidated province to retain the name Bac Ninh and establish its political-administrative center in the current Bac Giang.

At the Resolution No. 60-NQ/TW of the 11th plenum, the Party Central Committee proposed merging Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces, with the merged entity to be named Bac Ninh province and the political-administrative center located in the current Bac Giang province.

Bac Giang is also well known for its lychees.

Following the proposal, the Standing Committees of provincial Party Committees of Bac Giang and Bac Ninh have formed working groups to coordinate merger preparations, including policy harmonization, infrastructure assessment and personnel arrangements among others.

The Hanoi–Bac Giang Expressway connects Bac Giang and Bac Ninh provinces.

The two provinces are expected to submit the merger documentation before May 1, with public consultations scheduled for April 20.

Historically, Bac Giang and Bac Ninh were merged as Ha Bac Province from 1962 until 1996.

Driven by industrial growth, Bac Giang’s socio-economic landscape has seen remarkable progress in recent years.

They separated from January 1, 1997 and have since seen rapid socio-economic growth, particularly in industrial development.

Prior to the merger, Bac Giang and Bac Ninh are among the fastest industrializing and most rapidly developing provinces in the country.

Bac Giang has posted the country’s highest growth rates in recent years, with GRDP growth at 19.3% in 2022, 13.45% in 2023 and 13.85% in 2024.

In the first quarter of 2025, the province led the nation again with a 14.02% growth rate. Total foreign direct investment for 2024 and the first quarter of 2025 reached USD 2.23 billion.

Six-way intersection is taking shape as Bac Giang City’s economic, political, cultural center and a vibrant destination for entertainment and leisure.

The province is home to 16 industrial parks and 55 industrial clusters, contributing to an increasingly integrated logistics and production ecosystem, particularly in areas bordering Bac Ninh province like Viet Yen township and Hiep Hoa district.
