Vietnam wins gold in rapid chess at the World Youth Rapid & Blitz Championship

Vietnam has clinched its first gold medal in the rapid chess category at the 2025 World Youth Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship, which is taking place in Greece from April 12 to 18. The achievement went to player Nguyen Nam Kiet in the U14 division.

This year's event featured the participation of 430 players from 48 countries and territories who are competing across six age groups (under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18) for both boys and girls. Vietnam sent a 40-player delegation to the championship.

Nguyen Nam Kiet scored 9 points from 11 rounds (8 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss), edging out teammate Dau Khuong Duy on tiebreaks to take the gold.

Duy also finished with 9 points, earning the silver medal, while Duong Vu Anh secured the bronze with 8 points, completing a podium sweep for Vietnam in the U14 boys’ division.

In other notable results, Nguyen Bao Nam won silver in the boys’ U8 category, and Hoang Tan Vinh took bronze in the boys’ U10.

On the girls’ side, Nguyen Thanh Huong claimed silver in the U12 group with 8.5 points, finishing behind Yunker Alisa Genrietta (10 points).

Tran Hoang Bao An earned bronze in the girls’ U10, while Nguyen Binh Vy added another bronze in the U18 group.

The blitz section of the tournament also began on April 16. With strong momentum from the rapid competition, Vietnam’s youth players are expected to deliver more medal-winning performances.

The event provides valuable international experience for rising stars aiming for long-term success in elite chess.
