Phuc Hoa early-ripening lychees: Improved quality, favourable sale

Updated: 20:11, 27/05/2020
(BGO) - At this time, Phuc Hoa early-ripening lychee (Tan Yen district, Bac Giang province) begins to enter the harvest season. This year, thanks to favourable weather and farmers’ application of VietGAP farming process, the fruits are big and good-looking. The production is expected to be much higher than the previous year.

Favorable sale

We and agricultural extension officers of Phuc Hoa commune visited the locality’s early-ripening lychee growing area. At this time, people and traders are focusing on harvesting and selling lychees. From the early morning, along the main roads in villages across the commune, many trucks are waiting for transporting lychees for consumption.

With 400 lychee roots, it is expected that Vi Duc Chinh's family in Lan Thinh village, Phuc Hoa commune will harvest more than 16 tonnes of fruits, 7 tonnes higher than last year. In order to timely harvest the lychees, over the past three days, his garden has always had 2-3 workers picking up the fruits. The lychees ripen early, with nice appearance, so many traders come to the garden to buy the fruit.

Le Van Cuong, a trader from Lao Cai province, who set up a lychee purchasing point in Phuc Le village, said that he and some friends came here to set up the lychee purchasing point a week ago. On average, they buy about 30 tonnes of lychees to transport to China for sale.

“Many years of purchasing early-ripening lychees in Phuc Hoa, I found that this year the lychees have a better appearance and higher quality. The average price of early-ripening lychees ranges from 20,000 VND to 28,000 VND per kg. Those from gardens meeting VietGAP standards are sold for 30,000-35,000 VND per kg,” Cuong added.

Thus, compared with the previous year, the price of early-ripening lychees in Phuc Hoa increased 5,000-15,000 VND per kg (depending on type).

This year, due to the effects of the Covid-19 epidemic, no Chinese people have come to buy local lychees. However, in the commune, there are more than 30 large-scale purchasing points of traders inside and outside the province, creating favorable conditions for local farmers’ lychee sale. This year, lychees are mainly consumed in the domestic market, especially southern provinces, instead of being exported to China and Cambodia as before.

According to a representative of the Phuc Hoa early-ripening lychee production and consumption cooperative, the whole commune has 600 hectares of lychee, of which 300 hectares are recognized as meeting VietGAP standards. Currently, local people have harvested 30 percent of the lychee output. Phuc Hoa early-ripening lychee output this year is estimated at more than 10,000 tonnes, nearly double the previous crop’s.

Outstanding quality

The outstanding advantage of this year's Phuc Hoa early-ripening lychee crop is better fruit quality and appearance than previous years. According to Nguyen Thi Nhung, a communal agricultural extension officer, the lychee quality improvement is partly due to favorable weather but the key factor is still farmers’ application of biosafety farming methods VietGAP and GlobalGAP.

For example, Ameii Vietnam Joint Stock Company (Hanoi) and Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Co., Ltd. (Ben Tre province) have just signed commitments to buy 1,000 tonnes of early-ripening lychees of a group of households in the commune that applied VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards at a price of about 30,000 VND per kg.

In order to contribute to improving the quality of early-ripening lychees, the district and provincial authorities have paid attention to supporting the packaging and labeling of Phuc Hoa early-ripening lychees.

On the other hand, the locality has created conditions for traders in registration of temporary residence and arrangement of parking lots and purchasing points; while sending forces to ensure traffic safety, social order and security; improving roads; and strengthening coordination with the electricity sector to ensure stable power supply for lychee sale.
