Sound of victory and desire for peace
Bac Giang Newspaper’s reporter interviewed musician Nguyen Cuong - the scriptwriter on the threshold of the important event.
As a "musician of the Central Highlands", recently, you have been very attached to Bac Giang. Could you share your feelings about the land and people here, especially when invited to participate in writing the script for the programme?
In the process of composing songs about the Central Highlands, I have also gradually written works based on the culture and folk music of the Northern Delta region. About 4 years ago, I wrote the first song about Bac Giang: "Rung rung tam xuan".
Musician Nguyen Cuong talks to the Organizing Committee of the Bac Giang Culture and Tourism Week 2020 at the Tay Yen Tu Spiritual – Ecological Tourism Complex (Son Dong district) about the idea of the script of the art programme. |
Later, when participating in a music composition camp organized by Song Thuong Garden - an art unit in Bac Giang city, I learned more about Bac Giang - a land of civilization that is rich in historical and cultural traditions with many unique folk songs.
In particular, the Xuong Giang Victory location left me a lot of strong emotions with all of its humane meanings and historical values. Therefore, I, composer Minh Dao and Song Thuong Garden decided to together write and produce an opera called "Xuong Giang".
When Song Thuong Garden was assigned to organize this art programme, we decided to early complete an Oratorio performance entitled "Xuong Giang dai thang – Non nuoc thai hoa".
Could you share the literal idea and form of the programme script?
The content of the script looks towards the great values of peace, not focusing much on restoring and re-enacting the past battles, ensuring the art quality and clearly showing the traditional and indigenous cultural values.
I built the script in the form of Oratorio, which is nearly similar to Opera. The programme also features characters performing on stage. The characters’ actions are conveyed entirely through music and vocals.
With a very new form of expression, how was the content of the art programme’s script built?
The 55-minute art programme "Xuong Giang dai thang - Non Nuoc thai hoa" is divided into 3 chapters. Chapter 1: "Son ha nguy bien" (The country faces dangers); Chapter 2: "Ganh gao nuoi quan pha thanh Xuong Giang” (Providing rice for troops to destroy Xuong Giang Citadel); and Chapter 3: "Xuong Giang dai thang – Non nuoc thai hoa" (Xuong Giang Great Victory – Peaceful Country). The man, the mother and the wife will be the characters throughout the work.
The content of Chapter 1 will recreate the scene: when the country faces dangers from the invasion of the enemy, the mother, the man, his wife and the whole country are counting on a leader who will lead the people to fight for safeguarding the land.
In Chapter 2, the people contribute to the victory, from providing rice for troops, seeing off their children to the battlefield, to supplying weapons to Lam Son insurgents to fight the enemy and destroy Xuong Giang Citadel. It affirms that the people themselves make victory.
The content of Chapter 3 asserts our nation's thirst for peace. Although we have won the enemy, we are ready to give up weapons to maintain peace. This is a very humane thought expressed in the work.
This is a special programme. surely will a large number of performers be mobilized?
The programme will see the participation of many artists from central theaters, students of art and art education schools, and pupils with an estimated number of 320 people. They will include 50 professional dancers, 70 people from the Hanoi Cheo Theater and the Vietnam National Tuong Theater; a 50-strong choir from the National University of Art Education, and 50 children. Singer Tung Duong and artist Thu Huyen will also be present in the programme.
We hope this will be a special art gift to the people of Bac Giang and tourists at the opening ceremony of the Bac Giang Culture and Tourism Week 2020, which will take place on the evening of the fifth day of the Lunar New Year.
Thank you!
Cong Doanh
