Tran Thi Huyen is dedicated to organic orange product

Updated: 17:02, 12/01/2023
(BGO) - With her love for the nature, Tran Thi Huyen (born in 1968) left Hanoi capital to settle in Na Vang village, Van Son commune, Son Dong district, Bac Giang province to realize her dream to develop organic orange cultivation model. Huyen has made great efforts to transform 15 hectares of hilly land into an organic orange farm bearing high economic efficiency.

The orange growing model not only helps to enrich her family but it also opens a new window for the people of ethnic minority groups in the district in doing business.

Huyen’s 15-hectare organic orange farm is covered with evergreen colour and fruitful trees. For Huyen, the highest target to do farm work is to provide consumers with clean and qualified products; thus, she has concentrated on organic orange farming model in recent 5 years.

She uses organic, probiotic fertilizers and biological products to prevent harmful pests. Especially, herbicides are rejected from the list of pesticides used for orange trees, instead, she uses biological products in line with composed organic fertilizers from bark, bean, straw and livestock waste to fertilize the trees.

Besides, she planted many species of wild grass under the tree canopy to create vegetation covers to maintain the soil humidity and ecological balance for good growth of the trees and less harmful pests.

“The labour cost is quite high because the trees must be cared all year round. Particularly, materials to make organic fertilizers for over 6,000 orange trees cost about 800 million VND (34,122 USD)”, said Huyen.

Thanks to her great efforts, Huyen’s farm was granted certificate of Vietgap standards by Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations in 2021 while Xoan orange of her Cooperative named Sen Ngoc was rated 3-star OCOP product by the provincial People’s Committee in 2022.

The organic Xoan orange has been promoted on e-commerce platforms and brought to the market in the province and the supply chains of safe fruits in big cities like Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong and Da Nang. This year, the total orange output is estimated at about 80 tonnes sold at the price of 40,000 VND (1.7 USD) per kilo right at the garden bringing Huyen a profit of more than 3 billion VND (127,959 USD).

“I have visited a number of orange gardens in Bac Giang to seek supply for fruit stores in Hanoi but I was very surprised to see a really large organic orange garden on the hill sides of Huyen. Specially, I did not smell any chemical pesticides, instead, I got very comfortable feeling when getting into the garden. The orange has very sweet taste, distinct fragrance, thin peel and succulent pulps”, according to Dang Tien Lam, a trader from Hanoi city.

Doing farm work is never easy. However, with her “can-do” spirit, Tran Thi Huyen’s organic orange farm has yielded “sweet fruits”.

“In order to have good oranges, I must understand the soil conditions, growing and caring techniques. I want to create a consumer- friendly product and trademark. I often introduce good products to my relatives and friends to use first to be secured of the good quality and safety, then build up trust of consumers and traders”, Huyen happily shared.
