Vice Chairman of provincial People’s Committee Phan The Tuan: Lychee crop 2021 – Opportunities from difficulties

Updated: 20:34, 02/07/2021
(BGO)- The lychee crop has basically ended now. Amid numerous difficulties due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, with the attention of the Government, ministries, central agencies and localities, Bac Giang province has made efforts to have a sweet lychee crop. Bac Giang Newspaper interviewed Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Phan The Tuan on this issue.

Would you please give a brief of the results of this year's lychee crop?

Up to now, the province's lychees have basically been sold out with more than 210,000 tonnes. This year's lychee crop saw the highest yield and quality in recent years.

Sales volume exceeded the target and scenario set initially. The lychee quality was appreciated by domestic and foreign consumers so the product was sold smoothly.

Amid difficulties caused by the pandemic, what proactive measures did the province take?

With the Covid-19 outbreak, Bac Giang not only had to protect the lychee areas to ensure quality but also needed urgent solutions for timely sale. Therefore, the province soon developed a plan for safe and Covid-19-free lychee growing areas, focusing on directing production and quality improvement.

The province also soon built a plan to promote lychee consumption right from the beginning of the crop with three specific selling scenarios, and very flexibly applied those scenarios. Therefore, lychee was sold favorably at home and abroad.

Attention was paid to selling lychee in the domestic market through the system of supermarkets, trade centers and wholesale markets, online channels, zalo, Facebook, fanpages; and major e-commerce platforms.

For foreign markets, the province soon connected with the Trade Counselors of all countries in the world; and expanded some markets such as Japan, Australia, the Middle East, the EU, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Macau...

The province successfully organized an online conference to promote lychee consumption from Bac Giang to 29 domestic and international locations. Thereby, it implemented a series of trade promotion activities to support the sale of lychee and other agricultural products of the province.

In 2021, the total value of lychee and related services was estimated at over 6.8 trillion VND (294.5 million USD), nearly the same as the figure last year. Of which, revenue from lychee reached more than 4.2 trillion VND and the rest was from related services.

Bac Giang proactively proposed the Government direct localities to open “green lanes" to allow lychee trucks to quickly pass through Covid-19 checkpoints when showing a Covid-19 safety certificate; and asked ministries, central agencies, provinces and cities nationwide to support the province in connecting and promoting the sale and export of local agricultural products.

For the first time, in this lychee crop, the province established groups to support lychee sale in Lao Cai and Lang Son provinces. It also set up hotlines to promptly remove difficulties and provide support for smooth and quick lychee sale…

What lessons did Bac Giang learn from this lychee crop?

Bac Giang attached special importance to the quality and prestige of products and this is a vital factor to maintain the chain from production to consumption in a sustainable way. Along with the production process, it is necessary to do a good job of market forecasting, thus actively developing consumption scenarios for each agricultural product and flexibly applying them in each specific period to segment the markets appropriately and sell the product well in domestic and foreign markets.

The province made good preparations in logistics such as warehouse, electricity, water and banking to serve in the selling process.

Finally, the timely attention, direction, support, encouragement and sharing of the Government, provinces and cities nationwide, units, individuals, and media agencies in the whole country helped make a successful lychee crop in 2021.

Thank you very much!
