Vietnam secures two more Olympic slots in boxing and judo
Tam sealed her Olympic place in the Women’s Flyweight (48-51kg) event after accumulating 190 points from international tournaments.
In addition, her ticket is partly thanks to the fact that world No. 1 Park Mi Choi of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) will be absent following her country’s decision to withdraw from the summer Games.
Nguyen Thi Tam (L) is the second Vietnamese boxer eligible for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. |
Tam, reigning national and SEA Games champion, is the second 2020 Olympian for Vietnamese boxing, following Nguyen Van Duong in the Men’s Featherweight (52-57kg) category.
As recently announced by the International Judo Federation, Vietnamese fighter Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy qualified for the Tokyo Games in the Women’s 52kg event, as one of Asia’s top 10.
Thuy, ranked 11th in the continent, was promoted to replace 10th-ranked Yu Sun Jon (DPRK) who had withdrawn.
Both tam and Thuy are in the process of completing Covid-19 vaccination and preparing necessary procedures for the Tokyo trip.
