Voluntary blood donation: Farmers’ noble gesture
The whole village joins blood donation movement
Everyone in Dong Ich village, Huong Mai commune (Viet Yen district) knows the family of Nguyen Van Thuc (76 years old) and calls them "the blood donation family". His family has nine children and grandchildren working in agriculture and they all have enthusiastically participated in blood donation.

Currently, his two sons, Nguyen Van Minh and Nguyen Van Thanh, have donated blood five times; the youngest son Nguyen Van Tuan 10 times; the two grandchildren Nguyen Van Duc (3 times) and Nguyen Van Hao (2 times). Thuc's family members have so far donated 27 units of blood.
Diem Thuy Uyen, Chairman of the communal Red Cross Society, said that Huong Mai commune has eight villages with 2,800 households. Every year, its blood donation result always exceeds the assigned target by 100-150 percent. According to preliminary statistics, the whole commune currently has more than 100 farming families with two or more members participating in voluntary blood donation. The two families Diem Cong and Do Viet received trophies of honor from the provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation Mobilization for making 50 blood donations or more.
In recent years, Luc Ngan district has always topped the province in blood donation. Vi Van Tuan, Chairman of district Red Cross Society and deputy head of the district Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation Mobilization, said that by 2020, the district had contributed more than 2,800 units of blood, reaching 255 percent of the target assigned by the province. Nearly 80 percent of the donated blood came from farmer volunteers.
Multiplying role models
According to the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation Mobilization, Bac Giang is one of the few localities in the country to organize festivals in response to major voluntary blood donation mobilization campaigns such as the Red Spring Festival, the all-people blood donation day, the summer campaign for red blood drops, and the Red Journey in all districts and city. The province has always led localities in the northern mountainous region in voluntary blood donation. Blood donation has become a meaningful movement that has been spreading among all strata of people.

According to Chairwoman of the provincial Red Cross Society Le Thi Duyen, previously, blood donors in localities were mainly civil servants, teachers and youth union members, but now farmers contribute nearly 70 percent of the blood volume received during festivals. Their noble gesture has contributed to ensuring blood supplies in medical facilities, sharing difficulties with patients.
To maintain this result and make the movement strongly spread among people of all classes, since 2008, the provincial Red Cross Society has advised the provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation Mobilization to hold a ceremony to honor outstanding blood donors at provincial level; and direct the grassroots-level units to base on the local real situations to commend and recognize blood donation examples. To date, more than 6,200 collectives and individuals have been honored by the provincial Steering Committee.
In localities, there are many creative ways to attract a large number of farmers to respond to the movement. For example, the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation Mobilization in Hiep Hoa district assigned each commune and township to set up a blood donation mobilization team and distribute leaflets to residents at village meetings and mass gatherings.
Sharing her campaigning experience, Nguyen Thi Kim Xuan, Chairman of the Red Cross Society of An Ha commune (Lang Giang district), said “To encourage farmers to participate in blood donation festivals, I and other members of the Executive Committee of the Red Cross Society recommended the communal People's Committee give 130,000 VND (5.66 USD) to each individual blood donor. Those who have made five blood donations are presented gifts on the occasion of the year-end ceremony reviewing the emulation movement”.
In each village meeting and mass activity, information about the gesture of donating blood to save lives and safe blood donation without harming health is provided for participants. Then, every farmer, after donating blood, will become a core propagandist calling for family members and people in the same village to join the blood donation movement, thus practically spreading humane values and promoting solidarity in the community.
