Bac Giang athletes at SEA Games 30 arena: gold medals expected for chess and athletics

(BGO) - In the list of the Vietnamese athletes participating in the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 30) held in the Philippines, Bac Giang has four, competing in three sports: Chess, athletics and badminton.  This time, the athletes are ready to enter the arena with the goal of winning the highest achievements. 

Chess players include Vo Thi Kim Phung (born in 1993), competing in blitz chess; and Nguyen Thi Mai Hung (born in 1994), competing in rapid chess. Athletics athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh (born in 1995) will participate in 1500m, 5000m and 3000m steeplechase events. Young girl Tran Thi Phuong Thuy (born in 2000) will compete in the women's badminton team event.

Among the four athletes of Bac Giang present at the 30th SEA Games, Vo Thi Kim Phung is highly expected because she is currently a bright face in the Vietnamese and regional chess when continuously bagging gold and silver medals in continental tournaments in recent years.

After winning a gold medal at the Asian Chess Championship held in China in blitz chess in March this year, Phung excellently pocketed a gold medal in standard chess and a blitz chess gold medal at the Southeast Asia Chess Championships held in Bac Giang city in November.

Chess player Nguyen Thi Mai Hung has participated in many major tournaments in the region.

Previously, in 2017, in China, she was crowned the champion in standard chess at the Asian Chess Championship to bring glory to the country.

Along with Vo Thi Kim Phung, Nguyen Thi Mai Hung has also won high achievements in regional tournaments, including a standard chess gold medal at SEA Games 27, a individual blitz chess gold medal at the Asian Chess Championship in 2016; three first prizes in standard chess and blitz chess at a tournament in Malaysia in 2019; and a silver medal in standard chess at the All India Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament 2019...

Mai Hung shared that she and her teammates are currently training in Ho Chi Minh City under the guidance of Ukrainian and Vietnamese coaches. In addition, she also practices on the Internet with the goal of achieving the highest results at the SEA Games.

As a "famous" athlete in the Vietnamese athletics since 2013, since the 29th SEA Games in 2017, track and field champion Nguyen Thi Oanh has continuously won gold medals in 1,500m and 5,000m in some domestic and international tournaments. At present, Oanh is evaluated as a strong and typical athlete of the nation and Southeast Asia with three strengths: 1500m, 5000m and 3000m steeplechase.

Preparing for the 30th SEA Games, in addition to her planned training at home, in November, she had a 20-day training tour in China with exercises to strengthen general endurance and technical expertise.

Competing at SEA Games 30 in the badminton women's team event, Tran Thi Phuong Thuy (born in 2000) is an excellent young player with great potential when she won a gold medal at the national tournament for excellent rackets 2019 held in Thai Binh province; a bronze medal in the women’s single event at the National Individual Badminton Championships 2019 organised in Dong Nai province; and a bronze medal at the National Games 2018 in Hanoi.

Nguyen Thi Oanh is assessed as a strong and typical athlete of the country and Southeast Asia.

Since October, Thuy and her team have been training hard at the Bac Ninh Sports University, from 8:00 to 11:00 in the morning, and from 3:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon under the guidance of Indonesian and Vietnamese experts with training lessons on endurance, speed and strength.

The Vietnam sports delegation has 856 members, including 568 athletes, competing in 43 out of 56 sports at the 30th SEA Games. The players in some sports began to compete on November 20. It is expected that 529 sets of medals will be awarded to high-performing athletes.
