Bac Giang sports: The imprints of female athletes

Updated: 07:29, 20/10/2019
(BGO) - For many years, Bac Giang province’s high-achievement sports has made strong impressions on the national and international arenas. That success was obtained thanks to the important contributions of female athletes.

At the 2018 National Games, the Bac Giang sports team won 9 gold, 3 silver and 9 bronze medals, ranking in the top 20 of the country. It is noteworthy that in addition to the gold medal in the men's doubles in shuttlecock, the remaining 8 gold medals belonged to the female athletes in sports such as chess, athletics, badminton and wushu.

Mai Hung and Kim Phung (in the middle) win the gold medal in the women’s team blitz chess at the 8th National Games.

Typical among those were Nguyen Thi Sen, Tran Thi Phuong Thuy and Than Van Anh (badminton); Doan Thi Van Anh, Nguyen Thi Mai Hung and Vo Thi Kim Phung (chess); Nguyen Thi Oanh (athletics); and Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy (wushu)...

In the annual tournaments, female athletes have continuously made particularly excellent achievements. For example, the recent National Team Chess Championships 2019, all the 2 gold and 3 bronze medals were bagged by female players.

According to statistics, every year Bac Giang’s high-achievement athletes participate in 45-50 tournaments, winning about 200 medals of all kinds, more than 70 percent of which come from female athletes.

Meanwhile, at the Tien Phong Newspaper Run 2019, the only gold medal of Bac Giang athletics went to female runner Nguyen Thi Oanh. At the National Wushu Championships, Thu Thuy had no opponent in the women’s 56 kg category..

Not only in the domestic playground, the female athletes of the province have also affirmed their role on the international arena. Chess player Nguyen Thi Mai Hung won a gold medal in the women’s standard chess at the 27th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 27) and the blitz chess gold medal at the 2016 Asian Individual Championships; Vo Thi Kim Phung became the champion in the women’s standard chess at the 2017 Asian Continental Chess Championships.

In athletics, over the past two years, Nguyen Thi Oanh has made many prominent achievements. In addition to 2 gold medals in the 1,500m and 5,000m events at the 20th Southeast Asia Games (SEA Games 29), she also won a bronze medal in the women’s 3,000m hurdles at the 2017 Asian Games. She dominated the 5,000m and 1,500m running tracks at the Ho Chi Minh City International Track and Field Vietnam Open for the recent 3-4 seasons.

In wushu, artist Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy has also won silver and bronze medals at Asian and world junior champs.

According to Chu Viet Bac, Deputy Director of the provincial Center of Sports Training and Competition, investing in this direction has brought about great results because Bac Giang sports has a contingent of potential female athletes. Moreover, competition in women's events in the domestic playground is not really as fierce as that of men's events, so female athletes have more opportunities to vie for gold medals.

In the high-achievement sports development strategy towards the 2022 National Games, Bac Giang sports will continue to invest heavily in 11 key sports including athletics, chess, badminton, wushu, shuttlecock, sepak takraw, wrestling, boxing, vovinam, judo and tennis.

On the basis of comprehensive assessment of the overall level of the country and the reality of the unit, the provincial Center for Sports Training and Competition, which is in charge of directly training top athletes, determined that investment will be focused on many women's events.

With many domestic and international medals, it can be affirmed that the contingent of female athletes has become a key force of Bac Giang sports. In the coming years, with the priority and positive investment, this force will surely continue to affirm their role and position, contributing to the growth of the provincial sports.
