Bac Giang develops three scenarios for lychee consumption

Updated: 10:45, 18/05/2021
(BGO) - Amid the complicated developments of the Covid-19 pandemic, on May 17, the People's Committee of Bac Giang province issued a plan for lychee consumption in the context of the pandemic. Accordingly, the province develops three response scenarios. Specifically:

Scenario 1: The Covid-19 epidemic is controlled, lychees are sold smoothly: 50 percent of the lychee output is consumed domestically (about 90,000 tonnes), and 50 percent is exported (about 90,000 tonnes). In this scenario, consumption in the domestic market is concentrated at wholesale markets; distribution corporations which have a system of supermarkets; processing and export enterprises; traditional markets; and e-commerce marketplaces. Export markets include China, Japan, Australia, Thailand, the US and the EU…

Scenario 2: The Covid-19 pandemic develops complicatedly, but is still under control: 70 percent of the lychee output is consumed domestically (about 130,000 tonnes), and 30 percent is exported (about 50,000 tonnes). In this scenario, lychees are consumed domestically at wholesale markets such as Thu Duc and Binh Dien (Ho Chi Minh City), Long Bien (Hanoi), and Hoa Cuong (Da Nang), with an estimated volume of about 55,000 tonnes; large distribution corporations, 20,000 tonnes; e-commerce marketplaces, 2,000 tonnes; and traditional markets, 13,000 tonnes and dried lychee.

Scenario 3: The Covid-19 epidemic has a comprehensive impact, with export activities frozen and lychees mainly consumed domestically. Accordingly, the province will support and promote lychee consumption in the domestic market. Consumption at large wholesale markets is up to 80,000 tonnes; at distribution corporations with a system of supermarkets and trade centers, about 30,000 tonnes; and at export processing enterprises including Dong Giao Food Joint Stock Company, Dung Sy One Member Company Limited and Asia Food Company, 30,000 tonnes. The remaining lychees are sold at traditional markets and trading floors, dried and processed.

In order to well implement the lychee consumption options, the provincial People's Committee directed the Department of Industry and Trade to actively organize well promotional activities and programmes to connect the lychee supply and demand in the domestic and export markets; coordinate with the People's Committees of Luc Ngan and Tan Yen districts and related departments and agencies to support, promote and create conditions for Chinese traders to purchase lychees; guide organizations and individuals to comply with conditions for lychee export such as stamps, labels, and packaging in accordance with regulations of the importing countries.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will continue to guide people to plant and care for lychees in the right process, ensuring that lychees produced in areas such as Luc Ngan and Tan Yen have outstanding quality and are safe for domestic and foreign consumers; and product origin can be traced. It will also coordinate in promoting market development activities and linkages for lychee consumption; while proactively providing information on testing and quarantine regulations during the production process.

The provincial public security force will direct subordinate units and checkpoints in the locality to create favorable conditions for businesses, units and vehicles (in case full epidemic prevention and control measures have been applied according to regulations set by the Ministry of Health) to trade and transport lychees smoothly...
