Bac Giang keeps lychee area stable, improves product quality

Updated: 14:16, 07/02/2023
(BGO) - In recent years, lychee has seen bumper harvests with stable prices. Therefore, many farmers in Bac Giang province have shifted from other fruit trees to lychee. This fact requires the provincial agricultural sector and local authorities to actively grasp the situation and give timely recommendations to farmers so as to keep the lychee growing area stable, avoiding massive conversion.

Back to lychee

Thi Van Ba, a 42-year-old Nung ethnic in Khuon Trang village, Ho Dap commune, Luc Ngan district has 25 years of experience in lychee growing. According to him, due to the climate and soil conditions, lychees in the communes on the pass usually ripen 10-15 days later than those in other localities in the district. Thanks to good quality, the products are sold favorably at higher prices than the district’s average.

“Realizing the high value from the lychee tree, in the recent three years, my family has switched from orange to lychee, with an additional 200 early-ripening lychee trees. Most recently, I cut down the apple trees to plant 70 more early-ripening lychee trees. My nearly 100 early-ripening lychee trees will bear fruits this season," said Ba.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the lychee area in the province has increased from more than 28,300 hectares in 2021 to over 29,700 hectares at present. The increased areas in Luc Ngan, Luc Nam, Tan Yen and Son Dong districts mainly house early-ripening lychee trees.

Avoiding "planting - cutting, cutting - planting" cycle

Thanks to the application of intensive farming techniques, the province has seen high lychee output, reaching over 215,800 tons in 2021, the highest ever so far, and 195,600 tons in 2022.

In 2023, the weather is favorable, with the temperature and humidity very suitable for flower differentiation. The flowering rate reaches more than 90% for early-ripening lychees while that for main-crop lychees is estimated at over 80%. With an area of more than 29,700 hectares, including about 27,000 hectares under harvest, the output is expected to be similar to last year.

This is both good news for lychee growers and also a pressure on localities, especially in selling the product. In fact, in order to stably develop the area of fruit trees in general and lychee in particular, the departments, agencies and localities have taken many synchronous solutions, from planning and plan-making to developing policies for production, processing, preservation and consumption.

In Vo Tranh commune of Luc Nam district, the Resolution of the communal Party Organisation for the 2020-2025 tenure defined that along with the forestry economic development, lychee will be the main crop of the commune. Accordingly, the locality maintains about 1,000 hectares of lychee and pays attention to guiding people to follow VietGAP production process to improve product quality.

The lychee area in the province has increased from more than 28,300 hectares in 2021 to over 29,700 hectares at present. The increased areas in Luc Ngan, Luc Nam, Tan Yen and Son Dong districts mainly house early-ripening lychee trees.

In Luc Ngan district, realizing the lychee development potential in the pass area, the district People's Committee has asked the communes to plant this tree in mixed gardens with low economic efficiency.

With its responsibility, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will focus on reviewing the entire lychee acreage, especially new growing areas, to assess conditions, thereby providing guidance and technical assistance to farmers. It will strengthen inspection, give recommendations and only provide technology support for growers in areas under the planning.

Deputy Director of the department Le Ba Thanh said: “In order to increase the value of lychee and make it competitive in the market, the sector will actively guide farmers to improve product quality through the application of VietGAP, GlobalGAP, organic and biosafety processes; and good management of planting area and packing facility codes. It will strengthen inspection of establishments trading in agricultural materials and pesticides in growing areas in order to ensure that no products outside the list reach lychee growers.
