Updated: 17:52, 17/05/2025

BAC GIANG – On May 16, an international delegation visited Vinh Nghiem Pagoda in Tri Yen commune, Bac Giang city (Bac Giang province).

The delegation included ambassadors, representatives from international organizations in Vietnam and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Vice Chairman Mai Son and the Spanish Ambassador join a woodblock printing activity.

The Permanent Vice Chairman of the Bac Giang provincial People's Committee Mai Son met the guests along with representatives of the provincial Buddhist Sangha and culture departments of Quang Ninh, Hai Duong and Bac Giang provinces.

Vinh Nghiem Pagoda is one of two sites from Bac Giang included in the dossier nominating the Yen Tu – Vinh Nghiem – Con Son, Kiep Bac complex for UNESCO World Heritage recognition.

The delegates explore the cultural and historical value of the woodblock collection recognized by UNESCO as part of the Asia-Pacific Memory of the World Programme.

The pagoda is dedicated to Buddha and the Truc Lam Zen patriarchs Tran Nhan Tong, Phap Loa and Huyen Quang. It served as a training and certification center for monks during the Tran dynasty and is considered the cradle of Truc Lam Zen Buddhism.

The delegation toured major structures such as the three-entrance gate, main hall, ancestral halls, bell tower and woodblock archive. They also observed Buddhist rituals and experienced traditional woodblock carving and printing.

Introduced by experts and the head monk, the guests were impressed by the site's scale, landscape and cultural value—particularly its collection of over 3,000 woodblocks from the 16th to 19th centuries, which were recognized by UNESCO as Asia-Pacific Memory of the World documentary heritage.

The provincial leader highlighted the pagoda's historical, cultural and architectural significance and thanked the guests for learning about local heritage. He hoped their visit would help promote the site's global recognition.

The delegation also visited Kiep Bac and Con Son in Hai Duong and Yen Tu in Quang Ninh as part of the “Explore Vietnam Day 2025” programme, jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the three provincial governments on May 16–17.

The annual event, held since 2015, aims to update the diplomatic corps on Vietnam's foreign policy and socio-economic progress while promoting its cultural heritage. This year’s program also supports the nomination of the Yen Tu – Vinh Nghiem – Con Son, Kiep Bac complex as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
