Bac Giang seizes opportunities to export lychee through Kep station

Updated: 16:24, 20/05/2023
(BGO)- After Kep station (in Lang Giang district) is exploited as an international multimodal transport terminal, Bac Giang province has another transportation mode for export of farm produce. However, it will need time and joint efforts of the competent agencies, localities and enterprises to change the opportunity into advantages.

Kep station belongs to Hanoi- Dong Dang railway route, the starting terminal of 2 other railway routes including Kep-Ha Long- Cai Lan and Kep-Luu Xa. The station has 9 railway tracks for cargo loading, unloading and consignment.

There are 2 warehouses covering an area of 1,200 square metre, 5 freight yards with an area of 4,300 square metre and 1 over 27,000- square metre concrete cargo ground. Bac Giang has cooperated with Vietnam Railway Corporation (VNR) for years to build and open the international multimodal transport terminal in Kep station.

When Kep station runs the intermodal transportation services, it will create a goods transshipment hub for businesses in the provinces and other localities in the region and help to reduce logistics costs. Besides, it will help to attract import and export activities of the province and nearby provinces, which is expected to boost socio-economic development of Bac Giang and the northeastern region while supporting Dong Dang (Lang Son) and Yen Vien (Hanoi) stations in international multimodal transportation.

According to the provincial Department of Industry and Trade, the import and export volume of materials, machinery and equipment to serve the industrial parks in the province reached 1.7 million tonnes via Lang Son border gate and over 400,000 tonnes through Lao Cai border gate.

With such a large import and export volume, operation of Kep international multimodal rail station will “pull” the border gates nearer to Bac Giang and facilitate export of lychee through this international station. In addition, when customs services are implemented at this station, the import and export activities will become smoother helping to reduce vehicle load on roadways and ease traffic and farm produce congestion at the border gates.

Luc Ngan district is also quickly implementing several measures to seize opportunities from the international freight lines. With more than 17,300-hectare growing area, this year Luc Ngan is expected to harvest about 90,000 tonnes of lychee including 25,000 tonnes of early ripen lychee. The district targets to consume 78,300 tonnes of fresh lychee (about 80 percent of the expected output) including 43,300 tonnes for export (mainly to the traditional Chinese market).

To that end, the district People’s Committee has worked with Railway Transport and Trading Joint Stock Company (Ratraco), who operates Kep station to seek solutions for transportation of lychee via this station. At the latest meeting, the representative of Ratraco stressed, Kep station has been completed infrastructure and conditions on fire prevention and customs services. With about 200 containers (both refrigerated and normal ones), the station will meet the needs of transporting fresh lychee to China.

Leaders of the People’s Committee of Luc Ngan district and representatives of Ratraco, some enterprises and cooperatives discuss to seek solutions for exporting lychee via Kep station.

With enough freight (about 20 containers per each train), it will take about 8 hours from Kep to Pingxiang rail station (including customs clearance time), according to Ratraco representative. The transportation cost is 36.4 million VND (1,550 USD) for a cold container and 20.4 million VND (869 USD) for a normal container.

According to Nguyen The Thi, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Luc Ngan district, a number of traders expressed their attention and sought information about the journey to help lychee fruit “go abroad” via Kep station after the meetings with Ratraco.

The Customs Sub-department in charge of Bac Giang Industrial Parks planned to establish a customs service task force in Kep station. Accordingly, this team will perform state management in customs services for cargos transported by intermodal rails and cargos of enterprises located in the districts of Lang Giang, Yen The, Tan Yen and Luc Nam. The task force will include 11 officers. Implementation of customs services at the station will help to speed up customs clearance, which conforms to the current development trends.
