A campaign to call for a hundred days without workplace accidents was launched in Ho Chi Minh City on September 27.

According to the organisers, more than 100 businesses in Vietnam have joined the campaign. They will participate in training courses on workplace safety and hygiene, fire prevention, and pay fact-finding trips to factories.

Participants will also receive regular updates on safety requirements in the hope of preventing workplace accidents after the campaign.

The campaign, running until the end of this year, also forms part of the activities marking the centenary of the ILO.

ILO Vietnam Director Chang-Hee Lee said both employers and workers need to understand risks and devise necessary measures to prevent workplace accidents. Compensation for losses caused by such accidents accounts for about 3.94 percent of global gross domestic product each year, he noted.

In Vietnam, workplace accidents killed more than 1,000 people and injured 8,200 others in 2018, according to statistics of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.
