Further Covid-19 relief aid offered to people of Vietnamese origin in Cambodia

About 200 relief gifts, including rice, face masks and antiseptic solution, were handed over to households of Vietnamese origin and their Khmer counterparts in difficult circumstances due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in Phnom Penh on the morning of September 5.

It was the opening activity of the fourth phase of an Emergency Aid Programme for people of Vietnamese origin and their Khmer counterparts affected by the disease in Cambodia.

As announced by the Community Department of the Vietnamese Embassy in the country, a total of 1,847 vulnerable households in nine Cambodian cities and provinces will get support as part of the latest assistance, each gift consisting of 20kg of rice, face masks and antiseptic solution, amongst others.

According to Chairman of the Khmer-Vietnam Association in Cambodia Sim Chy, about 5,000 households of Vietnamese origin have been assisted in overcoming the impacts of the pandemic so far. As of September 5, the association has yet to record any Covid-19 cases in the community in Cambodia.

Addressing the handover, Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia Vu Quang Minh lauded the people’s efforts in overcoming their difficulties, highlighting the need for them to maintain good health and mobilise others to uphold a sense of fighting the disease.

Cambodia’s Ministry of Health reported on September 5 that the country has confirmed a total of 274 Covid-19 cases without any fatalities or new infections, of whom 272 patients have been given the all-clear.

Since early 2020, leaders of the Vietnamese embassy, the Khmer-Vietnam Association and Vietnam’s Consulates General in the provinces of Preah Sihanouk and Battambang have exerted significant efforts, calling on many agencies, businesses and philanthropists in the country to offer support in terms of both gifts and cash, to help the community of people of Vietnamese origin in Cambodia overcome the difficulties caused by Covid-19.
