Presenting new houses to the poor
The outdoor temperature was below 10 degrees Celsius with heavy rain but in the freshly presented great unity house of Nguyen Thi Dua (born in 1956) in Mau Son village, Chu Dien commune (Luc Nam district), the atmosphere was very warm with the laughs of relatives and neighbors who came to share joy and happiness with her.

Dua was in a particularly difficult situation. She usually got ill and lived alone in a dilapidated cottage. Grasping her circumstance, the Fatherland Front Committees of the province and Luc Nam district cooperated with the Luc Nam Garment Company and mobilized other social sources to provide Dua’s family with 50 million VND (2,100 USD) to build a new house.
The precious thing was that the neighbors enthusiastically supported her in the house construction. Thanks to that, the 35sq.m house, with tile roof, iron frame, brick walls, and clean ceramic tile floor were quickly completed.
According to statistics by the provincial Fatherland Front Committee, in 2018, the province supported the building of 492 great unity houses, with total funding of more than 9 billion VND (388,000 USD). |
“Having a solid, spacious house is something I have not dared to dream of before. This year I will celebrate the Lunar New Year in the new home, so I would like to thank the authorities, units, businesses and relatives for helping me have this joy." Dua confided.
That joy is also present in the new houses of Pham Van Ban in Cau Bai village; Hoang Thi Dang in Trung Phu Trong village, Tan Hung commune (Lang Giang district). These are poor households. Their houses degraded but they had no conditions to repair or rebuild them. With 30 million VND supported by the Fatherland Front Committees at all levels for each family as well as the help of relatives and neighbors, the new solid houses have been completed.
Before the Lunar New Year 2019, the Fatherland Front Committees at all levels supported the construction of nearly 100 great unity houses with a total value of more than 3 billion VND (129,300 USD). To date, all supported households have lived in their new homes.
Gifts of love
These days, everywhere in the province, agencies, units, businesses and benefactors are joining hands to prepare Tet gifts for the poor. According to statistics in 2018, the whole province had more than 33,000 poor households. The provincial Fatherland Front Committee raised funds to support half of the poor families with about 16,500 gifts, each worth 500,000 VND or 8.3 billion VND in total. The remaining half will be supported by authorities of districts, cities and communes so that all poor households have Tet gifts.

Associations have actively raised funds to take care of their members during Tet. For example, the provincial Association of Victims of Agent Orange/dioxin has prepared 4,300 gifts to give to its disadvantaged members. Le Thi Duyen, Vice Chairwoman of the provincial Red Cross Society, said: On January 16 and 17, the organization will coordinate with the Thien Tam Fund (VinGroup) to present 4,000 gifts to poor people and families in difficult circumstances in the province, each worth 500,000 VND. Before the Lunar New Year 2019, the society will give 300 more gifts in Luc Nam, Hiep Hoa and Lang Giang districts, and Bac Giang city.
According to Trinh Huu Ban, Standing Vice Chairman of the provincial Fatherland Front Committee, the Fatherland Front Committees at all levels and mass organizations have actively encouraged officials, civil servants and employees in agencies and units and enterprises; officers, soldiers and armed forces personnel; and donors inside and outside the province to donate money to support housing construction and present gifts to poor and disadvantaged people.
Previously, the all-level authorities and mass organizations have stepped up campaigns to raise money for the Fund for the Poor while reviewing the list of poor households to ensure the accurate and right-purpose support so that the gifts can reach the hands of those in need, helping them to ease difficulties and enjoy a warm and happy Tet.
