Production of safe lychee

Truong Thi Bay in Chao village, Giap Son commune has 1.5 hectares of organic farming lychee. The Agriculture Encouragement experts of Giap Son commune guide farmers to how prevent pests and care for lychee in flowering and fruit bearing period.

Quy Son is among the communes selected to grant planting area code for export with 14.7 hectares in So Ba and Dong Giao villages.

“Since lychee started flowering, the technicians from the district supporting team visit the gardens every week to check and guide caring procedures. When pests or diseases are detected, we were advised to choose bio-pesticides, spraying period and spraying methods, thus the lychee gardens are growing well promising a bumper crop”, said Le Van Kien in Dong Giao commune, who has 3 hectares of lychee growing area for export to Japan and EU.

It is necessary to strictly implement guidance of the competent agencies to prevent harmful insects especially fruit borers and use bio-pesticides to kill insects, according to Lam Nguyen Nang, Director of the district’s Center of Agricultural Service and Engineering.

The lychee planting area codes for export must follow VietGAP, GlobalGAP and organic standards. The gardens must be cleaned up with waste and pesticide packages well gathered. Besides, it is necessary to note enough information of cultivation diary, diary of using pesticides and fertilizers and place planting area code signs and pesticide warning signs.

Local government accompanies growers

This year, Luc Ngan district directs production of more than 15,700 hectares of lychee, up 300 hectares compared to previous crop with expected output of some 95,000 tonnes. In order to help farmers to improve lychee quality for export to Japan, the district provides 700 million VND (30,623 USD) for the households to buy pesticides and analyse product samples before export.

According to Tang Van Huy, head of the district’s Agricultural and Rural development division, in February the division advised the district people’s committee to issue the plan on lychee production and consumption. Besides, they proposed establishing the production steering teams with participation of the Agricultural and Rural development division, Center of Agricultural Service and Engineering and leaders of the communal people’s committees.

Of which, the district focuses on the production areas for high-ranking markets. They has directed, guided and supervised the lychee cooperatives and growers to gain high productivity, quality and ensure food hygiene and safety.

The district People’s Committee timely worked out the plan on consumption of lychee in the new context focusing on trade centers and big markets in Hanoi, Da Nang, Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City and leading distributors and retail groups. Apart from China, the district strives to bring lychee to other potential markets such as Southeast Asia and European countries.

The district will also foster promotion and consumption of the products on e-commerce platforms like Voso.vn, Postmart.vn, Sendo.vn, San24h.vn, Shopee.vn, Lazada.vn.

Besides, the locality will boost other lychee processing methods such as lychee juice, canned lychee and dried lychee. In this April, the district People’s Committee will organize a meeting to seek solutions for promoting consumption, processing and export of lychee while providing guidance for enterprises, cooperatives and traders on lychee packaging procedures for export to China in official way.
