New cold wave to send northern Vietnam temperatures to below 10 C

Updated: 16:39, 09/01/2025

A new cold wave is set to sweep across northern Vietnam starting Thursday, bringing temperatures in the plains below 10 degrees Celsius and plunging mountainous areas to under 2 degrees.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that the cold front will initially affect the eastern parts of northern Vietnam before spreading to the plains and western regions. Temperatures are expected to drop to 10-13 degrees Celsius in the plains and as low as 5-9 degrees in mountainous areas.

People in Hanoi stay warm by a fire in early 2024.

AccuWeather, a U.S.-based weather service, predicts that daytime temperatures in Hanoi will fall by around 4 degrees heading into the weekend, with nighttime lows dropping by 7 degrees.

High-altitude locations, such as Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province, could experience temperatures between 2-7 degrees on Saturday, making it one of the coldest days.

Central Vietnam is also expected to feel the impact of the cold wave, with temperatures ranging between 10-18 degrees Celsius.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged authorities in northern mountainous areas to implement measures to mitigate the effects of the cold and to advise residents on protecting their health.

Since December, northern and central Vietnam have experienced three cold waves, one of which saw temperatures in Lang Son Province's Mau Son area drop to as low as 3 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists warn that cold waves are likely to become more frequent and intense this month.
