Promoting Luc Ngan lychee – Vietnam’s fruit pride goes global

Updated: 11:32, 19/05/2025

BAC GIANG – With the lychee season approaching, Luc Ngan district (Bac Giang province) is seeing favorable conditions for a successful harvest. Local authorities are actively implementing measures to promote sales and enhance the brand of Luc Ngan lychee, one of Vietnam’s premium fruits. On this occasion, Bac Giang Newspaper interviewed Dao Cong Hung, Acting Chairman of the Luc Ngan District People’s Committee.

Early in the season, lychee growers faced serious irrigation challenges. What was the situation like in Luc Ngan?

The 2025 season shows great promise, with over 90% flowering and more than 70% fruit setting—an excellent start. However, from typhoon Yagi in 2024 until mid-April 2025, the district experienced a prolonged dry spell.

There was no rainfall, and water levels in reservoirs, rivers and streams dropped significantly. Underground water also declined, causing severe water shortages for agriculture, especially lychee cultivation.

According to our data, out of 10,348 ha of lychee orchards, around 4,160 ha (40%) suffered from irrigation shortages. Many highland trees in communes like Ho Dap, Tan Hoa, Phong Van, and Tan Son died due to water stress.

In response, we mobilized all available resources and guided local communities on alternative irrigation methods and pest control under dry conditions.

By late April, the weather shifted, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall, which completely resolved the water scarcity. Currently, lychee trees are developing well.

Early-ripening varieties are in the pulp formation stage, while the main-season crop is growing green fruit. We expect harvesting to start around May 25 for early ripening lychees and from June 15 for the main crop.

With favorable growing conditions, how is the district preparing to avoid the typical issue of high output but falling prices?

The district has taken early action. Farmers are following best practices under VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, ensuring safe, high-quality lychees with attractive appearance—ideal for both domestic and export markets.

We’ve implemented a comprehensive plan to support lychee marketing and link it with the 2025 Luc Ngan tourism programme. In late May, a delegation will visit Ho Chi Minh City to promote lychees and meet with Thu Duc City leaders, market managers at Thu Duc and Binh Dien wholesale markets as well as other local stakeholders to discuss logistics and distribution.

In early June, two more teams will coordinate with export hubs in Lao Cai and Lang Son provinces, including the Dong Dang border gate, customs and quarantine authorities, and the Mong Cai border gate in Quang Ninh, to streamline export procedures.

Are there special events planned this year to promote the brand?

Yes, we’re organizing the “Luc Ngan Lychee Tourism Programme – Vietnam’s Fruit Pride,” aiming to honor the efforts of local farmers and celebrate the cultural and economic value of lychee farming. The opening ceremony will be held in Muoi hamlet, Giap Son commune—a key growing area.

The festival includes musical performances featuring well-known artists, lychee-picking contests, and product showcases. It’s a unique opportunity to promote Luc Ngan lychee as a high-end Vietnamese specialty while attracting tourists to the region’s natural beauty and hospitality. These events also help stimulate local economic development.

How is the district ensuring readiness for large-scale harvesting, packaging and export?

We’ve coordinated closely with farmers and local businesses to ensure all logistics are in place. Currently, we have 13 packaging warehouses storing about 567,000 boxes.

Muoi hamlet in Giap Son commune has been selected as the venue for the 2025 Luc Ngan Lychee Festival opening ceremony.

More than 15 ice factories with a daily capacity of 18,000 ice blocks are operational, with peak supply reaching 20,000 ice blocks per day—sufficient for packaging around 1,500 tonnes of fresh lychees daily.

Additionally, about 1,000 household-operated drying ovens are ready, capable of processing around 6,000 tonnes of lychees. Power utilities, banks, lodging, food services, and transport businesses have also ramped up preparations to support the season.

What about the use of digital platforms in lychee sales? Is Luc Ngan keeping pace with digital transformation?

The shift toward digital technology and e-commerce in agricultural sales is not just a trend—it’s a necessity. It allows us to expand market access and increase the economic value of our specialty fruit.

Besides traditional distribution channels like wholesale markets and supermarket chains, Luc Ngan lychees are now sold on major e-commerce platforms such as Sendo (FPT), Voso (Viettel Post), Tiki-GO!, Shopee, Lazada, and Postmart (VNPost). These platforms allow consumers nationwide to easily access our products and ensure wider market reach.

To support this transformation, the district has organized training workshops on digital tools and e-commerce for local cooperatives, businesses and households.

We’re working with the provincial Department of Industry and Trade to raise awareness and build capacity among cooperative leaders and traders.

We train them to use livestream sales, leverage social media, and apply product traceability technology—building consumer trust while maintaining product freshness through flexible logistics services.

Luc Ngan lychee has become a symbol of Vietnamese fruit excellence. With support from authorities, scientists, farmers and enterprises, we are confident this year’s season will be both successful and memorable.

Our focus remains on quality, brand value, and market diversification—ensuring Luc Ngan lychee continues to reach farther and grow stronger in both domestic and global markets.

Thank you very much!
