Vietnamese chess ace beats world no. 2 to qualify for Banter Series semifinals

Vietnamese chess star Le Quang Liem outplayed world no. 2 Fabiano Caruana exceptionally well with a score of 5.5-3.5 on September 25, thus booking his place in the semifinals of the ongoing Banter Series 2020 tournament.

Banter Series 2020 is being held online by Chess24.com from September 22 to 28 with the participation of many world-leading players, including Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Teimour Radjabov and Anish Giri.

Vietnamese GM Le Quang Liem (R) plays Fabiano Caruana in the Banter Series 2020 quarterfinals.

Starting his campaign from the qualifiers, Liem overcame a series of strong rivals, including World Cup 2019 champion Teimour Radjabov, to make it through to the quarterfinals against Caruana.

Despite being considered the underdog, the Vietnamese player brilliantly defeated his tough US opponent after nine blitz games to advance to the last four.

Liem’s semifinal challenger will be another US player, Wesley So (Elo 2,779), who downed Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France, Elo 2,778) 6-4 in the quarterfinals. The remaining semifinal will be between World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen (Norway) and Levon Aronian (Armenia).

The tournament has a total of US$36,000 up for grabs, with the overall winner to pocket US$14,000.
