Wrestling arena by Cau River

Updated: 18:58, 22/01/2019
(BGO) – There was a time when the wrestling movement in Quang Bieu village, Quang Chau commune (Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province) fell into oblivion, with only old people remembering the past competitions. Recently, this village has restored its wrestling arena and aroused the traditional wrestling movement among young people.

The traditional wrestling arena of Quang Bieu village was located next to the wharf and by the old communal house near the Cau River. On the festive days, this place became a meeting place for wrestlers. In Quang Bieu, since the ancient time, the spring wrestling festival has been usually for youths and teenagers in the village, and rewards are often small, meaningful gifts such as bicycles and Uncle Ho photos. Bonuses only aim to encourage wrestlers.

Most notably, the autumn festival takes place on the 12th and 13th days of the eight lunar month (the village rule day). The festival has a large scale and is open to men in and outside the province to show their talents. In September 2018, the people of Quang Bieu restored this wrestling festival with relatively high prizes (the first prize worth 8 million VND (345 USD), not including the audience's bonuses).

A number of "heavy-weight” wrestlers who have high professional and technical qualifications from Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Thai Binh, Thai Nguyen, Hai Phong and Hanoi came to complete at the event, offering many attractive matches.

According to Nguyen Truong Toan (67 years old), Secretary of the Party cell of Quang Bieu village, in the past, although the prizes for the winners in the Quang Bieu wrestling festival were not big, only bronze trays and pots or wooden cutting boards , the festival still attracted many talented people from many places. This was also a culture and pride of the local people.

Previously, Quang Bieu had many wrestlers who won high prizes in regional wrestling competitions such as Le, Ngang, Giang, Hai and Hung. However, due to difficult economic conditions, for a long time, the wrestling festival was only organized for the youth in the village, without guests. Since 2018, the village has restored this competition. Currently, every 2 years (on even year), Quang Bieu village organizes its wrestling festival which is widely announced to welcome young men from other places to compete.

According to the custom, until the festival of Quang Bieu village, wrestlers are bare to the waist and walk barefoot to the wrestling arena. Regardless of locality, age and weight, anyone who is talented registers to secure prizes. According to the rules of the game, wrestlers must knock out their rivals. It means that a part or both parts of the rival’s back must touch the ground, the belly up to the sky, or the feet above the ground. At that time, the winner is just recognized.

In order to promote the tradition of national wrestling, since November 2017, a traditional wrestling class for youths and teenagers in the village has been organized. They are taught by senior wrestler Nguyen Van Tung, a sports collaborator of the provincial Sports and Physical Training and Competition Center. The class has more than 30 students who have mastered the basic techniques. At the same time, many gifted young wrestlers have appeared, such as Nguyen Huu Luan, Hoang Thi Thanh Dung and Nguyen Thi Thu ...

At the Quang Bieu village wrestling festival, wrestlers have chances to display their fortes. Spectators encircle around the wrestling arena, standing on the Cau River dyke to cheer.
