Expansion of Hoa Binh Hydropower plant to commence in October 2020

Updated: 15:08, 27/05/2020
The Hoa Binh hydropower plant expansion project, the largest power project in 2020, is scheduled to kick start in October this year.

The expansion project has a total investment of over VND9.2 trillion (US$394.6 million), with 30% of the capital funded by Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and the remainder coming from commercial loans.

Including two turbines, the project will have a capacity of 480MW.

The Hoa Binh hydropower plant, the Vietnam’s second largest power plant after Son La hydropower plant, has a total capacity of 1,920MW and has been in operation since 1994.

The plant is in stable operation with an annual electricity output of nearly 10 billion kWh, making considerable contributions to the national electricity system and the provincial budget.

The expansion of the plant is expected to increase the capacity of the national electricity system and create conditions to utilise the annual excess of water discharged from the Hoa Binh plant in the flood season to generate electricity.

It is also expected that the expansion project will reduce the working intensity of existing turbines, thereby extending the life of equipment and reducing maintenance and repair costs.
