Hiep Hoa opens green lane for Hoang Luong water dropwort to fly

Updated: 18:52, 11/01/2022
(BGO) - For a long time, people in Hoang Luong commune (Hiep Hoa district, Bac Giang province) have had a prosperous life from growing water dropwort. In the last lunar month, the roads from the commune centre to the villages are bustling with trucks going in and out to bring the vegetable to other places for sale.

Bustling harvest season

At 7pm on a weekend day, the working atmosphere at the preliminary processing area of the Hoang Hau water dropwort production cooperative in Thanh Lam village was bustling. Dozens of workers quickly put vegetables on trucks for leaving in time at 8pm.

According to Quach Van Hoang, director of the cooperative, more than 5 tonnes of water dropwort on the trucks would arrive in Long Bien market (Hanoi) tonight. Currently, the family has two trucks to transport vegetables. Since the 12th lunar month, the amount of goods is large, so the cooperative regularly hires 30-40 workers.

Hoang Luong water dropwort has a sweet and crispy taste, becoming a delicious dish in many families' meals. At the end of the year, this dish is loved by more and more families.

Different from rice, a water dropwort field needs to be about 80 cm - 1 m deep, with concrete banks built to keep water for the plants to grow. After 40-45 days, farmers harvest a batch. During the Tet holiday, the demand is high, so farmers go to the fields early in the morning to prepare enough vegetables for sale.

In 2021, the water dropwort output in the whole commune was estimated at nearly 40,000 tonnes, with the selling price from 8,000-10,000 VND/kg, earning total profit of about 250 billion VND (11 million USD), an increase of nearly 50 billion VND compared to the previous year. The average income of local people was about 45-50 million VND/person/year. The poverty rate was lower than the district’s average.

In previous years, the commune hired workers from some neighboring localities such as Tan Yen, Yen The and Phu Binh district (Thai Nguyen province), but this year the epidemic situation is complicated, many families have mobilized forces in place.

Amid the complicated development of the Covid-19, in early December 2021, the People's Committee of Hoang Luong commune proposed the district Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control open a green lane for water dropwort to be consumed in other provinces and cities like Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Nghe An, Quang Binh and Thai Nguyen.

To ensure the safety of the water dropwort production area, the communal Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control requires drivers and traders to test for SARS-CoV-2 virus every 3 days; and regularly report health status to local authorities. Therefore, during the past time, trading activities of people in the largest growing area in the country have been maintained smoothly.

Thanks to water dropwort , many families earn an income of several hundreds million to billions of VND per year like the households of Duong Van Duc in Hoang Giang village, Nguyen Van Hung in Thanh Luong village; Nguyen The Duong in Dai Thang village, and Quach Van Hoang in Thanh Lam village.

Scaling up safe production areas

In cold winter days, the outdoor temperature is very low, but it is just after 4 am, the working atmosphere in the vegetable fields in Thanh Lam village is already busy.

Nguyen Xuan Duong, Chairman of the Hoang Luong communal People's Committee, said that out of 260 hectares of arable land, nearly 200 hectares are for growing water dropwort , including 110 hectares produced according to VietGAP standard, 30 hectares meeting OCOP (One Commune One Product) standard, and 30.5 hectares for safe vegetable production.

There are few purely agricultural communes with a strong economy like Hoang Luong. The locality has established a water dropwort production and trading association with eight cooperatives which are responsible for purchasing products from farmers.

Currently, Hoang Luong water dropwort has been present in many provinces and cities across the country, and on shelves in many large supermarkets. Vegetable growers here wish the Party committees, authorities and competent agencies at all levels to have support policies in terms of microorganic organic fertilizers, herbal plant protection drugs, and promoting production following VietGAP standard towards building an organic vegetable production area.
