The planning area includes the whole administrative boundary of Yen The district. The north borders Dong Hy and Vo Nhai districts, Thai Nguyen province, the south borders Tan Yen and Lang Giang districts, the east borders Huu Lung district, Lang Son province and the west borders Phu Binh district, Thai Nguyen province.

The land area for planning is about 306,300 hectares. The population is expected at about 120,000 by 2030 and 155,000 by 2040 with a vision to 2050.

The planned region is featured for high-tech and high quality agriculture development, forest protection, cultural – historical – ecological and resort area, development of clean industry, trade service and services for industrial, agricultural and trade village development. Besides, this region plays an important role in national defense and security.

The orientation for regional space development includes setting up key economic divisions and sub-regions, functional zones towards connecting to both the general development of Bac Giang province and neighbouring provinces.

The region is planned to divided into separate functional zones for development of trade service, industry and handicraft, urban system, rural residential places, agricultural and forestry development area, tourism area, relic and natural landscape conservation area and national defense area.
