In particular, 2020 is the first year Japan agrees to allow the import of fresh lychee from Vietnam. It is a new market with great potential for development.
Immediately after obtaining the written consent of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan, on February 6, 2020, the Bac Giang provincial People's Committee issued Plan No. 21/KH-UBND on production and export of fresh lychee to the Japanese market.
The press release stated that, with the attention and direction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Industry and Trade as well as the active coordination of the affiliated units, especially the Plant Protection Department, the province has been granted 19 eligible planting area codes, covering 103 hectares with 107 participating farmers and an estimated output of over 600 tonnes. It has also built facilities for steaming, sterilizing, preserving products, and analyzing product samples at the Global Export and Import Foodstuff Joint Stock Company in Kim street, Luc Ngan district.
As the complicated developments of Covid-19 pandemic are causing difficulties for the sale of lychee, especially export, the People's Committee of Bac Giang province has actively directed departments and agencies to implement specialized measures and proposed the Prime Minister, concerned ministries and central agencies allow foreign traders and experts to enter Vietnam to survey and purchase Bac Giang lychee.
All of the above cases have been put under medical quarantine accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Health on the prevention and control of Covid-19. Especially, senior Japanese experts have come to Bac Giang to check the production, preliminary processing and packaging of lychee exported to Japan.

The results show that Bac Giang lychee met standards and conditions prescribed by Japan.
On June 19, 2020, the Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Co., Ltd and the Ameii Vietnam Joint Stock Company exported the first batch of lychee to the Japanese market by air. From June 20 onwards, the Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Co., Ltd, the Global Export and Import Foodstuff Joint Stock Company, the Ameii Vietnam Joint Stock Company, and the Bamboo International Joint Stock Company will continue to ship Bac Giang lychee to the Japanese market by sea and by air.
The Bac Giang provincial People's Committee pledges to create favorable conditions for domestic and foreign businesses and traders to buy lychee. At the same time, the province wishes to continue receiving the attention and assistance of the leaders of the Party, the State, ministries and central agencies. It proposes the central and local mass media continue to promote the Bac Giang lychee brand in order to help it reach consumers in countries, especially new potential markets like Japan.
