Nguyen Thi Oanh wins miracle double gold in 30 minutes
Oanh (number 561) was in a difficult situation when SEA Games 32 organizers suddenly put the 1,500 m run (scheduled to take place on Thursday) right before the 3,000 m hurdles on Tuesday, which gave her just 20 minutes to change and take a breath between the two events. |
Facing the risk of injury and failure in both events with such a short break but Oanh still decided not to give up. The 1,500 m run, which started at 5:30 p.m., is the event that Oanh had won gold in the last three SEA Games editions. After 800 m, she began to accelerate and break away from her opponents. |
In the last 400 m, the 28-year-old runner left her competitors nearly 100 m behind and finished the run in 4 minutes and 16.85 seconds. This is not Oanh’s best personal result, but it could be within her calculation, in order to save stamina for the 3,000 m hurdles 20 minutes later. |
When competitors sat and even laid on the piste because they were tired, Oanh did not have time to rest. |
The Vietnamese runner stopped to take a breath for a minute and then went straight into the technical area to prepare for the 3,000m hurdles at 5:50 p.m. |
Without taking a break, Oanh was told that she has to be at the track for the next run. In addition, she was also asked to go for a doping test, but the runner said she would do it after the run. In the 3,000 m hurdles, Oanh competed with three competitors - teammate Nguyen Thi Huong and two runners from Philippines. |
Oanh was right behind Joida Gagnao (number 487) for the first 2,600 m. She showed incredible endurance compared to those who did not compete in the 1,500 m run before that. |
In the last 400 m, Oanh sped up and created a distance of 50 m with other competitors to finish first in 10 minutes and 34.37 seconds. She established an incredible achievement, winning two gold medals in middle-distance running events in just 30 minutes. |
After finishing her run, Oanh showed fatigue and started panting. |
At SEA Games 32, Oanh won three gold medals in less than 24 hours. On Monday, she won the 5,000 m run. |
After catching her breath, Oanh celebrated her victory with the Vietnamese flag. |
