Thai Nguyen puts VND436 billion bridge into operation

Ben Tuong Bridge, the largest bridge in the northern province of Thai Nguyen, was put into operation following a ribbon-cutting ceremony held in Thai Nguyen city on December 21.

Construction of the bridge began in June 2016 at a total investment of over VND436 billion (US$18.66 million) and was finalized six months ahead of schedule. The bridge has a total length of 760 meters, with the bridge section consisting of three main spans across Cau River, measuring 380 meters long and 23.6 meters wide.

The bridge, designed by the Republic of Korea’s Kunhwa Engineering & Consulting Co., Ltd., is part of the second phase of the northern mountainous urban programme project implemented in the seven northern mountainous provinces of Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai, Dien Bien and Hoa Binh, with funding from the World Bank.

The project component for Thai Nguyen costs over US$61 million for the building of 12 facilities in transport, urban infrastructure, schools and environmental improvement, with Ben Tuong Bridge among the key works. So far, 11 out of the 12 facilities have been completed and put into use, contributing to changing the urban face of Thai Nguyen city.

Addressing the event, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Uong Chu Luu said that giving priority to implementing urban and transport infrastructure development projects is currently a breakthrough stage in the development of Thai Nguyen city.

Ben Tuong Bridge put into operation will contribute to reducing traffic congestion and boosting local socio-economic development.

He praised the efforts made by the units and contractors in the construction of Ben Tuong Bridge while thanking the World Bank for providing active support for the Ben Tuong Bridge project in particular and other projects of the northern mountainous urban programme project as a whole.
