Unique lychee garden laden with fruits for 30 years

Updated: 12:46, 15/06/2024

BAC GIANG – Though many lychee gardens in Bac Giang province saw a crop failure this year, the family of Diep Thi Senh in Trai 1 village, Phuong Son commune (Luc Ngan district) still earns high income. In particular, the lychee trees have been planted since 1992 but never failed.

Everyone is excited when coming to the lychee garden of Senh's family which are laden with beautiful bunches of bright red fruits. There are clusters of dozens of fruits dangling under the tree canopy. The tree density is sparse, airy while the garden is clean and convenient for visitors and the harvesting process.

This year, the lychees of Senh's family are bought by Chinese traders in the garden at 70,000 VND per kg.

Senh shared: "With lychees, I don't worry about crop failure, I only care about the selling price. For over the past 30 years, my family has had a bumper lychee harvest".

The reason why the woman over 50 years old is so confident is because she understands her lychee garden. It was planted in 1992. Initially, it covered 1 hectare of lychees then half of the garden was cut off and converted to sweet oranges.

Luc Ngan land is already famous for lychees, so even if she converts to any crop, she still retains a part of the land for lychees with more than 100 trees currently.

Lychee gardens use organic fertilizers, microorganisms and biological products.

In this lychee crop, the harsh weather maked caring task more difficult. Every year, she only circles the bark once then the tree is blossomed and fruited, but this year Senh must circle it twice.

"In Luc Ngan, there are many good gardeners, but I still proceed as experience accumulated over the years. When the flowering stage came near, I saw that the tree has good vitality, some branches had sprouted buds. So I continued to circle the bark and stopped watering to prevent the tree from producing buds then gather nutrients to form flower branches. Thanks to that, my family still has a good harvest this year," Senh said.

The garden owner said it is very difficult to popularize the experience because it can be applied to one garden but not good for another garden. All depend on specific characteristics of each tree and the soil quality.

The delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Bac Giang province visits the lychee garden of Senh's family.

The entire lychee garden uses organic fertilizers, microorganisms and biological products. Even pesticides are of biological origin. She absolutely does not use herbicides so it helps protect beneficial organisms in the soil.

Thanks to the experience of "seeing the tree, taking care of it", this year Senh's family wins big with expected output of about 8 tonnes of fruit. The product is purchased by Chinese traders at a price of 70,000 VND per kg at the garden, bringing hundreds of millions of VND in profit.
