Vietnamese fighter receives $50,000 after first UFC win against Muay Thai world champ
Vietnamese fighter Quang Le earned his first victory in the UFC after defeating Peruvian fighter Gaston Bolanos, taking home a US$50,000 bonus for delivering one of the most impressive moments of the night.
The bout took place in the bantamweight division (61.2 kg and under) at UFC Fight Night in Iowa, the U.S. on Sunday. In the first round, both fighters traded powerful leg strikes and wrestled on the ground, but Le was unable to gain a clear advantage.

In the second round, Le caught a right kick from Bolanos, took him down, and began to dominate with punches.
He then took his opponent’s back and locked in a rear-naked choke at 1 minute and 26 seconds. Bolanos resisted for another 26 seconds before passing out.
The referee immediately called an end to the fight. Le pointed to the crowd in celebration, drawing loud applause, while Bolanos received medical attention. Overwhelmed with emotion, Le knelt on the mat and burst into tears, MMA Junkie reported.
Le’s performance was named one of the four most impressive moments of the night, earning him a $50,000 bonus. As a relatively new UFC fighter, his standard match earnings range from $10,000 to $30,000.
The Vietnamese fighter described the win as a dream come true after years of watching UFC fights.
"I was so afraid, so scared coming out for this fight, because I needed this so bad. I dedicated everything, sacrificed to get here and I am so happy to get the win," he said after the match.
Born in 1991, Le specializes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, while his opponent Bolanos is a Muay Thai world champion. Le said his strategy was to wait for an opportunity to take his opponent’s back, a plan that paid off in the second round after Bolanos started making errors.
This win marked Le’s first success in UFC, the world’s premier MMA organization. Previously, he lost by decision to American fighter Chris Gutierrez on Oct. 8, 2024, at UFC on ESPN, and was knocked out by Xiao Long of China at UFC Fight Night on Nov. 23, 2024. In both losses, Le had moments where he nearly secured a submission but couldn’t finish.
Le was born in Bien Hoa City in southern Vietnam's Dong Nai Province, under the name Le Pham Phuc Quang. His family later immigrated to the U.S., where they opened a nail salon.
He initially studied information technology at university but dropped out after two years to pursue his passion for martial arts. He also has a background in traditional Vietnamese martial arts.
In August 2024, Le officially signed with the UFC.
"I’m very proud to be representing my country and dreaming of one day to be able to carry the flag to the biggest stage like the UFC," he told LFA at that time.
Le caught the UFC’s attention by winning all eight of his professional MMA bouts prior to signing, including seven victories in the Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA), an American league known for supplying talent to the UFC.
The win over Bolanos helped Le secure an extension to his UFC contract. He said he is gaining valuable experience with every match, allowing him to refine his strategy, with physical fitness never being an issue.
Before Le, several fighters of Vietnamese origin had competed in the UFC. Among the most notable is Cung Le, who recorded two wins and two losses between 2011 and 2014. Others include Phan Si Nhat Nam (2010–2014), Ben Nguyen (2015–2018), and Kyler Phillips (2020–present).
