Bac Giang athletes competing at SEA Games 31

(BGO) - At the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31), Bac Giang has nine athletes competing in many events. At this time, they are focusing on training with the goal of earning the highest achievements in the regional arena.

Nguyen Thi Oanh: Striving for the highest achievements

Nguyen Thi Oanh (born in 1995) is Vietnam's No. 1 track and field athlete from My Ha commune (Lang Giang district). Dubbed "tiny girl" by the media, she excellently won five gold medals in the women’s 1,500m, 5,000m and 3,000m steeplechase at the SEA Games in 2017 and 2019; one bronze medal at the Asian Games (2018); one gold and one silver at the Asian Beach Games (2016)...

Oanh is expected to bring home many medals at this 31st SEA Games. To increase endurance and prepare for the event, from mid-March to the end of April 2022, Oanh and her teammates trained in Hue city.

Nine athletes from Bac Giang competing at SEA Games 31: Nguyen Thi Oanh, Pham Tien San (track and field), Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy (Wushu); Nguyen Thi Mai Hung, Vo Kim Phung (chess); Pham Van Hai, Than Van Anh, Tran Thi Phuong Thuy, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan (badminton).

She registered to compete in 1,500m, 5,000m and 3,000m steeplechase events. Her goal is to defend three gold medals in these events.

Nguyen Thi Mai Hung: Practicing through the night

Nguyen Thi Mai Hung, born in 1994 in Tran Phu ward (Bac Giang city), is an excellent athlete who has won dozens of gold, silver and bronze medals at chess tournaments in Southeast Asia, Asia and the world.

These days, she is training with members of the national chess team in Ho Chi Minh City to compete at the Games. The training sessions take place all the week, including Saturday and Sunday. In order to prevent the Covid-19 epidemic, along with in-person competitions, Mai Hung will also compete online with Vietnamese and foreign players through websites.

Mai Hung and her teammates are training with the highest intensity. She will compete in blitz chess at the SEA Games, with a goal of winning the gold medal.

Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy: A continental-class wushu artist

Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, born in 1998 in Ngoc Chau commune (Tan Yen district), is currently one of the brightest wushu artists of Vietnam.

In the international arena, Thuy won a silver medal at the Asian Junior Wushu Championship in 2016, and another silver at the World Wushu Championships held in China.

At the 31st SEA Games this year, the coaching staff expects her to win the gold medal in the women's 56kg category. This is also the first time Thuy has competed in wushu at the SEA Games. What the coaches find very impressive in Thuy is the passion for martial arts and the "iron spirit" when competing.

Pham Van Hai - Than Van Anh: Determined to obtain medal in the "big sea"

Pham Van Hai was born in 2001 in Dong Son commune (Bac Giang city). After 12 years of participating in national badminton tournaments, he won nearly 40 medals of all kinds, about half of them are gold medals. Currently, Hai is one of the excellent players of Vietnamese badminton. In the past 5 years, at major domestic tournaments, he has often been paired with Than Van Anh (born in 2003), from Hoang Van Thu ward (Bac Giang city) to compete in mixed doubles.

Currently, Pham Van Hai - Than Van Anh and members of the Vietnamese badminton team are training at the Bac Giang provincial Sports Stadium to prepare for the 31st SEA Games.

Four Bac Giang players called to play in the 31st SEA Games badminton competitions include Pham Van Hai, Than Van Anh, Tran Thi Phuong Thuy, and Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan. This is the first time these young athletes have competed at the SEA Games and are determined to assert themselves in the international arena.
