Further assistance to register geographical indication of Luc Ngan lychee at potential markets

(BGO) – On April 1, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Bac Giang provincial People’s Committee (PPC) Mai Son received and worked with working delegation from the Intellectual Property Office of Viet Nam (IPOV) under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) led by Director General Dinh Huu Phi. 

To date, Bac Giang has been granted 1,174 brand registration certificates from IPOV including 2 geographical indications (GI), 4 certified brands, 60 collective brands and common brands.

Recently, Luc Ngan lychee has received GI in Japan, which is a chance for the farm produce to enter Japanese markets as well as others to boost up the trade exchange.

8 enterprises have showed their interest of buying the product while one company conducted survey to select the suitable place to export lychee to Japan. In 2021 season, it is expected to export 1,000 tonnes of Luc Ngan lychee to this market.

At the event, IPOV Director General Dinh Huu Phi pressed on the positive result from the coordination between IPOV and the province, typically Luc Ngan lychee received GI in Japan.

In the coming time, the IPOV will organize communication events to promote, introduce Luc Ngan lychee while creating favourable condition to support the tasks of training and providing knowledge on intellectual property to Bac Giang province; further instruct, complete and implement legal regulations that GI of Luc Ngan lychee must follow in Japan; assist to register protection of Luc Ngan lychee GI at other potential export markets.

Speaking at the meeting, PPC Permanent Vice Chairman Mai Son specified Bac Giang defined intellectual property having an active role as the driving force to accelerate the renovation and upgrade the technology level. It also helps protect the legitimate rights of the owners, enhance the competitiveness and boost up the local socio-economic growth.

The provincial leader expressed on the important meaning of the GI issuance for Luc Ngan lychee in Japan, affirming that the farmers in Bac Giang province are capable of producing high quality farm produce to enter the most demanding markets and open up more prospect to conquer domestic and foreign customers while creating chance for other local products.

Bac Giang strongly conducts digital transformation at various fields attaching to producing, processing, consuming farm products to gradually introduce them to online trade platforms domestically and globally.

The province highly appreciates the role of businesses and cooperatives in developing and exploiting the products with protection of intellectual property. During this period, the province hoped to recieve further support from IPOV and press agencies.
