Nguyen Thi Oanh and her outrun

(BGO) – The 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 30) was successfully closed at the Philippines. The Bac Giang born girl Nguyen Thi Oanh greatly contributed to the general achievement of Vietnamese sports. With the marvellous energy, Oanh exceeded her own limit to touch a new glory. 

“Making history” to Vietnamese track and field

There are many outstanding Vietnamese track and field athletes in the history, but Oanh still is a bright name. Two years ago, when the SEA Games 29 excluded her forte of 3,000 meter steeplechase out the competition programme, Oanh must practise her foible of women’s 1,500 meter and 5,000 meter run to join the event.

Thanks to the excellent performances, she made breakthrough efforts to stand in the glory podium twice times to look at the rising national flag in the melody of the Vietnamese anthem of Tien quan ca (Marching song).

Luckily, apart from these two above categories, the host Philippines added the event of women’s 3,000 steeplechase to the competition system at the SEA Games 30. Oanh was selected as the key athlete to “hunt” gold medals at three contents.

It was an easy decision because Oanh remained impressed manner. She won 3 gold medals at 3,000 meter steeplechase event at the 18th Asian Games; 3 golds and made 3 new records at three contents of 1,500 meter, 5,000 meter and 3,000 meter steeplechase at the 2018 National Sports Festival as well as many medals at the domestic and ASEAN championships.

With the outstanding maturity of the profession and competition experience, Oanh comfortably conquered the category of 1,500 meter run at the SEA Games 30 after 4 minutes 17 seconds 35 to win the trophy in the afternoon of December 7.

With three single golds that has never been done before by any Vietnamese track and field athlete at Southeast Asian Games, Nguyen Thi Oanh truly named in the national track and field history.

Three days later, she made a big success to defeat all rivals to pocket two golds at the demanding event of 5,000 meter run (morning) and 3,000 meter steeplechase (afternoon) at the same day.

Her gold medal and achievement of 10 minutes two milliseconds (break the SEA Games record) was commented as beyond the body’s limit by the track and field expert in the Southeast Asia.

Returning hometown after SEA Games 30, Oanh shared: “Under exhausted physical strength and tensed spirit, I thought that I cannot complete the 3,000 meter race. But when running, the expectation from the coach and relative help me conquer all”.

The extraordinary spirit and fortitude helped Oanh conquer the glomerulonephritis 5 years ago to the race course.

Prior to SEA Games 30, Oanh suffered from sleeping disorder during 7 months. The closer the sports event came, the worse the sleep was due to the tenses spirit in the competition. Only when Oanh burst into tear of victor, everything disappeared.

Though the girl born in 1995 in Nhuan village, My Ha commune, Lang Giang district has won many glories, she is not satisfied. Oanh shared to take great effort and practise to own a ticket to 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“It is a hard target but I must try to the target,” she affirmed.

With the great spirit, fortitude and practise in life and race courses, Nguyen Thi Oanh is believed to realize her dream of conquering the Olympics.
