Vietnam to begin construction of $67B high-speed railway in December 2026

Updated: 11:55, 26/04/2025

Vietnam is set to begin construction of a US$67billion north-south high-speed railway by December 2026, aiming to revolutionize national transportation and boost economic growth.

According to a new government resolution released on April 23, contractors for the massive infrastructure project will be selected by November 2026.

A KTX high-speed train arrives at a station in Suwon City of Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, April 20, 2025.

The Ministry of Construction has been tasked with finalizing all necessary procedures, including a comprehensive feasibility report due by August 2026.

The report will be submitted to the Prime Minister for final approval the following month.

The high-speed railway, covering 1,541 kilometers, will connect Hanoi's Ngoc Hoi Station with Ho Chi Minh City's Thu Thiem Station, traversing 20 different localities.

To ensure the smooth initiation of construction, local authorities in these regions, along with Vietnam Electricity (EVN), have been directed to complete all necessary land clearance before December 2026.

The Ministry of Construction is in charge of constructing the railway and providing the equipment, so that the project can basically be completed in 2035.

To accelerate project timelines, the government intends to issue special mechanisms and policies authorized by the National Assembly.

Additional resolutions will establish clear criteria for selecting businesses and organizations that will provide essential materials and services for the railway industry.

Alongside the railway project, a strategic development plan for Vietnam's railway industry extending to 2035, with a vision to 2045, will also be prepared and presented to the Prime Minister.

This comprehensive roadmap aims to assess the current railway infrastructure, outline future missions, and propose strategic solutions aligning with long-term industry goals.

Another key initiative focusing on training and human resource development for the railway sector will be established and submitted for approval, underscoring the government's holistic approach to enhancing the nation's transportation capabilities.

Localities along the proposed railway route have been instructed to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Construction in adjusting urban planning around station areas.

These regions will also develop projects utilizing land near railway stations, managing budgets specifically earmarked for relocation and compensation.
