Bac Giang promotes sale of 15,000 tonnes of early-ripening lychees

Updated: 16:42, 23/05/2025

BAC GIANG – Local authorities in the northern province of Bac Giang province are stepping up efforts to connect domestic and international markets for early-ripening lychees from Tan Yen district, with this year’s crop expected to yield 15,000 tonnes.

At a promotion conference held on May 23 in Phuc Hoa commune, Tan Yen district, local authorities and businesses signed over 30 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on production and sales, as well as five additional MoUs that focused on tourism development. The aim was to foster cooperation in both lychee trade and eco-tourism in the area.

La Van Nam, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, delivers a speech at the conference.

Tan Yen’s early-ripening lychee, a signature specialty of Bac Giang province, is cultivated over 1,250 hectares this year.

The total lychee area in the district spans 1,375 hectares, with overall output projected at 15,500 tonnes—500 tonnes more than in 2024.

Delegates witness the signing ceremony of lychee consumption cooperation agreements.

The district has maintained 900 hectares of lychee farming that meets food safety standards, including 455 hectares certified under VietGAP and GlobalGAP.

There are currently 33 growing area codes designated for export, of which 30 are renewed and three newly issued. These codes enable exports to key markets such as China, Japan, the EU, Thailand and Australia.

Delegates visit the exhibition booth showcasing Tan Yen early-ripening lychees.

Harvesting of the early-ripening lychee crop begins in late May, peaks in early June, and is expected to end by June 15.

Nguyen Duc Hung, Director of Global Food Import-Export JSC, a company specializing in processing and exporting agricultural products to Japan, Europe, the U.S., and Australia, said his firm has been working with Tan Yen cooperatives in recent years to establish GlobalGAP-certified growing areas.

The company also supports local operations with post-harvest processing, packaging, traceability systems and cold-chain logistics to ensure product quality during export.

Phuc Hoa early-ripening lychees are produced in accordance with VietGAP standards.

“This year, we are increasing our purchase volume from Tan Yen to fulfill orders from Japan, the U.S., and Australia,” Hung said.

At the conference, enterprises, cooperatives and tour operators signed additional agreements to jointly promote lychee consumption and develop community and ecological tourism in Tan Yen in 2025. These initiatives aim to diversify economic benefits for the region beyond agriculture.
