Updated: 21:05, 08/04/2025

In a remarkable academic feat, more than half the students in a high school class in Ha Tinh Province have scored at least 8.0 on the IELTS or over 1500 on the SAT, results that place them among the top students globally.

Hoang Ba Hung, principal of Ha Tinh High School of the Gifted in the central province, highlighted that the school's 12th-grade English-specialized class recorded exceptionally high performances, with many students achieving scores placing them among the world's top 1-2%.

Out of the 30 students in this class, 28 took the SAT, and 18 scored above 1500 out of a possible 1600. One student, Nguyen Thi Dieu Anh, achieved a perfect score.

The SAT is globally recognized and widely used for university admissions, with an average global score of 1024 among approximately two million test-takers in 2024. Scores above 1500 are typically within the top 1-2%, according to the College Board, which administers the SAT.

Additionally, 29 students from the class took the IELTS exam, and 20 secured scores of at least 8.0 out of a maximum of 9.0. The remaining students earned scores of 7.5. According to official IELTS statistics, only around 5% of Vietnamese candidates reached an 8.0 score in 2024.

Doan Phuong Thao, one of the students who scored 1540 on the SAT and 8.5 on IELTS, explained her motivation to sit both exams as a strategy to improve her prospects for university admission.

Nguyen Thi Thuong Huyen, the class's homeroom teacher, noted that many students chose to take both exams to broaden their university options domestically and abroad.
